Swimming and Diving Earns Second Place Finishes at Patriot Invitational

SATURDAY FULL FINALS RESULTS | FINAL TEAM SCORES
FAIRFAX, Va. - The Drexel men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a second-place finish at the 2018 Patriot Invitational on Sunday. The women's team finished with a score of 722 while the men's team scored 640. UNCW earned first for both the men and women with scores of 731 and 845, respectively.
Jordan Washart and Olivia Shaffer started out finals with eighth and ninth place finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle. Washart clocked in at 17:31.67 while Shaffer followed close behind with a time of 17:32.75. Dora Gercsak finished 15th in the event with a time of 17:44.45 while Niki Fistrovic earned 16th place, finishing at 17:52.58. Patrick Cobb took fourth place in the event for the men (15:55.75). Dane Bell (16:26.88), Joseph Brown (16:37.41) and Luke Hanner (16:49.30) finished in 12th, 17th and 21st, respectively.
Alexa Kutch won A-finals in the 200-yard backstroke at 1:56.65 while Alicia Diaz placed second in 2:00.23. Jason Arthur also won A-finals with a time of 1:45.54 and Spencer Hill won C-finals in 1:53.65. Greg Buckley (1:54.65) placed third in the C-finals and Alberto Lagrutta (1:55.01) placed fifth. Dane also swam in C-finals, coming in seventh with a time of 1:55.83.
Kutch also swam in the 100-yard freestyle B-finals, finishing in eight at 53:16. Courtney Levins placed fourth in C-finals (52.89) and Natalie Gundling placed seventh (53.24). On the men's team, Stathis Malamas (45.28) earned a fourth place finish in A-finals and David Kneiss (46.43), Alex Flynn (46.94) and John Scully (47.41) rounded out the last three spots of B-final. Luke Hanner finished seventh in C-finals with a time of 47.65.
Gabrielle Rudy claimed the third spot in the 200-yard breaststroke A-finals with a time of 2:20.23. Rebecca Churchill (2:21.31) and Corinne McCurley (2:24.89) won the B-finals and C-finals, respectively. Ralph Cannarozzi III finished third in A-finals with a time of 2:02.78 while Zachary Valenzuela (2:05.04) and Joseph Brown (2:05.99) earned seventh and eighth place. Harrison Schultz (2:07.70) finished in fourth in the B-finals.
April Forsthoffer claimed a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly relays, clocking in at 2:03.05 while Charlotte Myers took fifth in 2:05.43. Washart finished second in B-finals with a time of 2:07.36. Paris Raptis (1:48.58) won the event for the men, John Klein (1:52.23) placed second in B-finals and Joe Short (1:57.42) finished eighth in C-finals.
The squad made up of Rudy, Kutch, Levins and Diaz took third in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:28.76 while the team of Gundling, Perni, Forsthoffer and Myers finished in 10th at 3:32.51. The men's team of Malamas, Kiran Richardson, Kneiss and Arthur finished in third (3:02.22) while Flynn, John Scully, Cobb and Raptis earned ninth (3:07.79).
Drexel will compete at the AT&T Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. from Wednesday, Nov 28. Through Saturday, Dec. 1 to close out the 2018 portion of the schedule.

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Drexel women's swimming & diving team remains in first place and the men's swimming and diving team moved up to second as they head into the final day of competition at the Patriot Invitational. The women's total score of 542, leads UNCW by over 30 points while the men's team trails first place UNCW by over 100 points with a score of 458.
The Dragons started the finals off strong with top finishes in the 200-yard medley relay on both the men's and women's side. The team of Alexa Kutch, Gabrielle Rudy, April Forsthoffer and Courtney Levins took first in the event with a time of 1:43.42 while Alicia Diaz, Megan Sicinski, Hollie Hopf and Kaitlin Perni earned a third-place finish, clocking in at 1:44.90. The men's relay squad made up of Jason Arthur, Ralph Cannarozzi III, Paris Raptis and John Scully finished in third (1:30.60). Alberto Lagrutta Saenz, Harrison Schultz, Joe Short and David Kneiss finished sixth in the event (1:32.26).
In the 400-yard IM, Sicinski took fifth in the A-finals with a time of 4:29.44 and Rudy finished eighth (4:36.77). Dora Gercsak placed first in the C-finals, hitting the wall for a final time of 4:32.86. John Klein earned third in B-finals (4:06.93) and JonPat Ransom took seventh in C-finals (4:13.53)
Women's 100-yard butterfly A-finals was highlighted by Forsthoffer, who pulled off a second-place finish in 55.73. Charlotte Myers and Hollie Hopf also competed in the finals, earning third (56.10) and seventh (57.43) finishes, respectively. Jordan Washart finished third in C-finals (58.43). Corinne McCurley finished eighth in the event (59.49). Raptis and Short competed in the 100-yard butterfly A-finals for the men, finishing in second (49.40) and seventh (50.19) place. Stathis Malamas took second in B-finals (50.20) and Dom Scifo finished eighth (51.32) while Spencer Hill won C-finals (50.91), Alberto Lagrutta got third (51.14) and Dave Kneiss finished eighth (52.26).
Natalie Gundling and Myers swam in the 200-yard freestyle B-finals with second (1:54.77) and eighth (2:00.15) place finishes, respectively. Niki Fistrovic finished eighth in C-finals with a time of 1:56.76. Cobb highlighted the men's A-finals with a time of 1:41.68 while Luke Hanner finished fourth in B-finals (1:42.62).Bell Dane (1:43.58), Kevin Spear (1:44.94),Alex Flynn (1:46.53) and Malamas (1:49.88) finished third, fifth, seventh and eighth in the C-finals.
The women's 100-yard breaststroke belonged to the Dragons, placing five in A-finals. Rudy won the event with a time of 1:02.80, Sicinski finished third in 1:03.97, Rebecca Churchill finished sixth at 1:04.71, and Courtney Levins (1:05.18) and Forsthoffer (1:05.74) rounded out the competition. Sarah Cahill finished fourth in C-finals (1:07.04) and McCurley earned seventh (1:07.39). Four Dragons swam in A-finals for the men's team, with Cannarozzi finishing first in 54.99. Brown (56.24), Arthur (56.25) and Schultz (56.42) closed out the A-finals. Zachary Valenzuela won B-finals (56.87) and Andrew Zhugayevich finished eighth (1:00.81).
Kutch won the 100-yard backstroke A-finals in 53.41, with Diaz close behind for second, hitting the wall at 55.50. For the men, Arthur got second in the event (49.03). Lagrutta (51.75), Hill (52.05) and Rhys Kawaguchi (52.19) finished third, fifth and seventh in B-finals. Carson Huff and Short competed in C-finals with final times of 52.32 and 53.40.
The women's team earned third in the final event of the day, clocking in at 7:39.96 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team was made up of Washart, Forsthoffer, Gundling, and Myers. Deborah Stoddard, Olivia Shaffer, Kaitlin Perni and Fistrovic also teamed up in the event for ninth with a time of 7:46.17. The men's team earned third as well, with Malamas, Bell, Hanner and Cobb finishing in 6:48.24. Richardson, Brown, Raptis and Spear took ninth in the event (6:59.05).
Competition will resume on Saturday with the final day of competition beginning at 10 a.m. with the prelims followed by finals at 6 p.m.

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Drexel men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded their first day at the Patriot Invitational on Thursday at George Mason's Jim McKay Natatorium. The women's team sits in first with 233 points while the men's team will head into day two in third place with 196 points. The Dragons had 11 total all-time top 10 team performances, including five total top five performances.
Jason Arthur highlighted the men's competition, factoring into two first place finishes and a third-place finish. Arthur's first first-place finish of the day came in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:48.22 before teaming up with a squad of Ralph Cannarozzi III, Paris Raptis and Stathis Malamas for first in the 400-yard medley relay (3.17.04). Both Arthur's 200 IM and the 400 medley relay were new meet records. The women's team made up of Alexa Kutch, Gabrielle Rudy, April Forsthoffer and Charlotte Myers also notched first in the event, clocking in at 3:44.77.
Forsthoffer also earned second in the 200-yard IM for the women's team with a time of 2:04.11 while Patrick Cobb took second in the men's 500-yard freestyle relay, hitting the wall at 4:31.62. The 200-yard freestyle relay team comprised of Rudy, Hollie Hopf, Alicia Diaz and Kutch took second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.61.
Rounding out the individual top-three performances is Diaz, with third place in the 200-yard IM. She finished in 2:04.29, which was less than a second behind second-place finisher Forsthoffer. The men's squad of Arthur, Malamas, John Scully and Kiran Richardson also teamed up for third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.81).
