PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team (5-4) shot 62% as a team and made 11 three-pointers as they scored 95 points in a Wednesday night home win over the Loyola Greyhounds (3-6) from the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia by a final of 95-86.
The Dragons have won their last two games thanks in part to the three ball and free throws. They close a four-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. with UMBC.
Graduate student Trevor John went off in the win, going 7-of-9 from three-point range as he finished with 21 points.
Junior Alihan Demir led the Dragons with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore James Butler (12) and freshman Camren Wynter (11) also finished in double figures. The duo recorded the two double-doubles on the night for the Dragons as Butler grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Wynter dished out a game-high 10 assists. Wynter also seized four boards and went 5-of-6 from the line.
Senior Troy Harper notched 19 points on 5-of-7 from the field including 2-of-2 from deep and 7-of-8 from the charity strike.
John gave the Dragons life early, scoring the first nine points of the team's 20 on three three-points as Drexel led 20-17 with 11:45 on the clock in the first half. The squads went back and forth as they reached the under eight media timeout tied up at 28-28. Out of that timeout, Loyola went on a 11-2 run to go up 39-30 with 5:24 to play in the half. Drexel trimmed the edge down to four as the Greyhounds owned a five-point lead at the break, 48-43.
Loyola shot 66.7% in the first half on 18-of-27 shooting while Drexel went 15-of-26 from the field for 57.7% as a team.
Over the first 6:38 of the second half, Drexel outscored Loyola, 21-6, to take a 64-56 advantage. The Dragons pushed the lead up to 13 midway through the final period for their largest lead of the game at 74-61 with 9:46 to play. The Greyhounds used a late six-point run to get their deficit down to four with under two minutes to play. Drexel then scored seven unanswered points to push it back up to 11 before winning by nine, 95-86.
Drexel shot 31-of-50 from the field (62.0%), 11-of-16 from free-point range (68.8%) and 22-of-25 from the line (88.0%).
The 68.8 mark from deep marked a season-high for Drexel as they made double-digit treys for the third time in 2018-19.
It marks the fourth time this season that the Dragons have shot above 85% from the charity strike and third time with at least 20-made free throws, reaching both categories in the last two games. Drexel is 42-of-47 from the line in the last two.
