PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel wrestling team (3-3, 0-1 EIWA) dropped a conference matchup to the Army West Point Black Knights (1-0, 1-0 EIWA) on Friday evening from the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa. by a final of 29-5. The Dragons won two bouts from 133-pound freshman Ty Smith and heavyweight senior and No. 16 ranked Joey Goodhart as the middleweights faced four ranked Black Knights.
Trailing 3-0 after the 125 bout, the Dragons earned a win at 133 from freshman Ty Smith to even the match 3-3. Smith went up against Army sophomore Lane Peters. Smith earned two takedowns in the first period, going up 4-1. Peters moved the battle to the mat as Army gained an edge on riding time in the second period as the score remained. Army earned an escape to start the third to get within two and a takedown to even the bout at 4-all as time expired in the third with riding time favoring Army with 57 seconds. Heading into sudden victory, Smith grabbed two points in a takedown to win the bout by a 6-4 decision.
Army put forth strong efforts in the next seven bouts as the Black Knights gained control of the EIWA affair. Goodhart earned the late heavyweight victory for Drexel, their second win of the night.
Drexel sophomore Evan Barczak (157), redshirt freshman Bryan McLaughlin (174), junior Owen Brooks and senior and ranked No. 16 Stephen Loiseau (197) each faced tough opponents with Army's four ranked wrestlers: No. 17 Lucas Weiland (157), No. 13 Ben Harvey (174), No. 20 Noah Stewart (184) and No. 9 Rocco Caywood (197).
Barczak fell behind after an Army takedown by No. 17 Lucas Weiland near the edge of the circle that was confirmed after review in the first period. With a neutral-position start to the second, no early escape points were awarded before Barczak tied up the bout with a takedown with one minute left, 2-2. Weiland earned a late escape and led the bout, 3-2, and riding time, 53 seconds, heading into the third. With Weiland starting down, the Black Knight earned an escape to go up 4-2 as he took down Barczak for another two points to go up 6-2 with under a minute remaining. Barczak then got within one point after an escape and takedown, 6-5. But Weiland came through for Army with an escape and then last-second takedown, 9-5.
In a similar fashion, McLaughlin lost a close 5-2 decision to Army's No. 13 Ben Harvey in the 174 bout. Trailing 3-0 after a first-period takedown and second-period escape, the two started at a neutral position in the third. McLaughlin earned a takedown to get within one, 3-2, before an Army escape put the No. 13 Black Knight back up by two, 4-2. With under a minute left, McLaughlin almost scored a takedown as the pair went beyond the circle. Army earned the fifth point behind 90 seconds of riding time.
In the most dramatic bout of the night, Drexel's No. 16 Loiseau went up against No. 9 Rocco Caywood at 197 pounds. The duo remained on their feet for nearly the entire first period as it ended scoreless. Loiseau started down in the second but could not escape as Army gained riding time advantage. Loiseau was eventually able to reach his knees before scoring two points for a reversal, 2-0. Caywood then escaped for Army, 2-1, before the period ended. Caywood started down in the third and then caused himself a stall warning as riding time tipped over to Loiseau's favor. With under 22 seconds left in the third, the Drexel senior owned over a minute advantage on riding time before being hit with a stall himself with 11 seconds left. Army then escaped before Loiseau was hit with a second quick stall to award Army a point to even the bout, 3-3. The ref hit Loiseau with a third stall in the sudden victory period as Caywood won the 4-3 decision.
By the time the heavyweights went at it, Drexel was trailing 29-2, losing a team point after Loiseau's loss. No. 16 Joey Goodhart was amped for the final bout and earned a takedown in the first before picking Army's Ben Sullivan up off the mat. Sullivan was able to escape as the first ended, 2-1. Goodhart received one point for an escape in the second and Sullivan the same in the third. Near the end of the bout, Goodhart was awarded a point after taking continuous headbutts from the Army freshman as the Drexel heavyweight won by a 4-2 decision.
