PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team wasted little time jumping all over Towson on Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center as the Dragons cruised to their seventh consecutive victory, 78-53. The Dragons remained perfect on the season at the DAC, where they are now 10-0.
Drexel (17-5, 9-1) raced out of the gates with its highest-scoring first half of the season. The Dragons mounted a 13-2 lead just over three minutes into the action, prompting a timeout from first-year Tigers head coach Diane Richardson. The stoppage did little to slow Drexel, which held a 27-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 43-23 cushion as the teams went into the locker rooms.
The Dragons shot an eye-popping 62.1 percent from the floor (18-for-29) in the first half, despite hitting just one of eight from beyond the arc. Woods led the charge with a 7-for-8 showing in the first 20 minutes for 14 points, while Nihill did not miss any of her five attempts from the floor in scoring 12 in the first half.
Woods would finish with a career high 18 points to lead the team on 9-of-11 shooting. She also had seven rebounds as Drexel outdid the Tigers on the glass 37-36. Nihill also put together personal bests of 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes of action. She added a pair of steals to aid the defensive effort.
In all, five Dragons scored in double figures. Bailey Greenberg netted 14, going 6-for-8 from the floor in 19 minutes of action. Megan Marecic scored 12 off the bench for her second consecutive double-figure game to go along with three assists and three boards. Kelsi Lidge chipped in 10 with five rebounds and four assists despite seeing limited minutes due to foul trouble.
Aubree Brown had a team-high seven assists to go along with her four points and two blocks as the team put together 24 assists on 33 made field goals. Eline Maesschalck scored three and Kayla Bacon and Tereza Kracikova each netted two to round out the scoring for Drexel.
Drexel's .569 shooting percentage for the evening set a new season standard, as the Dragons were 33-for-58 and did not shoot below 50 percent in any of the four quarters. They benefited from good looks in the paint, where Drexel netted 46 of its 78 points. The team's five blocks also were a season high, and the 78 total points finished one off the best performance of the year back on Nov. 16 against La Salle.
After a perfect three-game homestand, the Dragons now take the show on the road for the next three. That starts on Sunday afternoon at the College of Charleston, where the Super Bowl Sunday matinee tips off at 1 p.m.
