ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Two Drexel men's swimmers were afforded the opportunity to extend their seasons at the National Invitation Championships over the weekend at the United States Naval Academy, and made the most of it with record performances. Joe Brown and Ralph Cannarozzi III each swam in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke races.
Brown left the meet with school records in both breaststroke distances, reclaiming a school record from Cannarozzi in the 100-breast on Friday. He swam a 54.59 in the preliminary heat of the 100-breast, earning the third seed in the finals. There, he nearly matched his own record with a 54.60, earning a podium spot in third place overall. Cannarozzi was seeded fifth in the finals after a 55.17 swim in the prelims, and lowered that time to 54.75, just behind his teammate in fifth place in the finals.
In the 200-breast, Brown was the top seed heading into the finals after swimming a 1:56.91 in the prelims, a time that established a new program record. Cannarozzi came in seeded sixth, swimming a 2:00.72 that was just off his personal best time.
Both swimmers did even better in the final, even though Brown was outtouched for first place at the meet. Brown's 1:56.54 smashed the existing school record of 1:58.47, which he owned after this season's CAA Championships. Cannarozzi also established a new personal best, finishing two spots behind Brown in fourth place after a 1:58.64 that would have been a school record heading into this season.
"I'm proud of these two," head coach Adam Braun said following the meet. "Joe and Ralph made the choice to extend their season and were rewarded with four lifetime-best times in four total events. They won a pair of medals and set two new team records. That's how it's done."
