CLEVELAND, Ohio – Austin DeSanto advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday to highlight the Drexel wrestling team's first day at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Garett Hammond and Stephen Loiseau also remain alive in wrestle-backs. Competition will run through Saturday evening.
DeSanto, the seventh-seeded 133-pounder, advanced to the second round by receiving a medical forfeit from Southern Illinois Edwardsville's John Muldoon. In the second, DeSanto made the most of the rest, taking a 15-7 major decision from 10th-seeded Jack Mueller of Virginia. He will take on second-seeded Stevan Micic of Michigan on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.
Hammond found himself with a tough matchup to open NCAAs against top-seeded Hayden Hidlay of NC State. Hidlay came away with a 13-5 major decision to send Hammond to wrestle-backs. There, he pinned 16-seed Mike D'Angelo just 98 seconds into the match to set up Friday's matchup with Kennedy Monday of North Carolina. Monday opened competition with an 8-6 upset of Missouri's second-seeded Joseph Lavallee.
Loiseau entered competition as the 12th-seeded 197-pounder. In the first round, he dropped a 12-4 major decision to North Carolina's Daniel Chaid. In wrestle-backs, he took a high-scoring affair from The Citadel's Sawyer Root, 17-14, to set up Friday's matchup with Stanford's Nathan Traxler.
Austin Rose (174 pounds) and Alex DeCiantis (184 pounds) dropped both their matches during the opening day.
