Offensive Outburst Powers Field Hockey Past Rider Sunday, 8-2

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team used an offensive surge Sunday afternoon to power past Rider at Buckley Field, 8-2. The Dragons improved to 1-1 on the year, while Rider opened its season 0-1. Sydney Muntone and Megan Wiest each knocked home their first two goals of the season. Alexis Sokach earned the victory in goal in her first career collegiate start.

Rider opened the game's scoring just 2:22 in as Julia Divorra sent a ball in from the right corner that found the stick of Marion Waterkeyn in front. The Dragons would battle back, finding their rhythm on the offensive end and dominating the possession for most of the game. Junior forward Tess Bernheimer scored 10 minutes in to tie the game up at 1-1 before Sydney Muntone notched her first of the year with just over two minutes left in the first half to give the Dragons the 2-1 halftime lead.

Muntone found the back of the cage again to open the second half scoring, this time taking the feed from Layne Litsinger, who sent a short pass from the far post to Muntone on the doorstep. Seven minutes later on the man-advantage, Wiest stole a Rider pass, made two defenders miss, and knocked a shot past Broncs keeper Lena Vandam to make it a 4-1 Drexel lead. After Rider tallied a penalty stroke goal, the Dragons scored four goals in the next 10 minutes to pull away for the 8-2 win. Amy Ferguson blasted a shot from just inside the circle from the right side to the far post just 64 seconds after Rider's stroke. Chandler McFeely then scored the first goal of her season at 65:20, followed by Wiest knocking home a Rebecca Weinstock pass for her second of the day at 66:54 and closed by Emily Berry's first collegiate goal off the feed from Katie Ronan with just under two minutes remaining.

Sokach made six saves for her first career victory in her first start. Vandam made five saves for Rider. Drexel outshot the Broncs, 23-10, and 13-8 on shots on goal. Both teams had seven penalty corner chances.

The Dragons return to action next weekend for a Labor Day Weekend homestand. Drexel welcomes Fairfield to Buckley on Friday night before hosting Indiana out of the Big Ten.
