PHILADELPHIA - Senior Shaelyn McCarty scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Drexel women's soccer team a 1-0 victory against La Salle at McCarthy Stadium on Monday evening.
Despite a scoreless first half, the Dragons got off to a strong start with shots from freshmen Rory Klingensmith and Morgan Rees in the first 12 minutes of play. After the initial burst to start the match by the Dragons, La Salle began to put pressure on and ended up out shooting the Dragons 5-4 heading into the recess.
Coming out of half time, La Salle continued to put pressure on the Dragons' defense and was awarded a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Sophomore Libby Baeza was up to the task, however, as she denied La Salle's Madison Bower and made a back-to-back save to keep the Dragons alive. With only seconds remaining on the clock, McCarty had one last opportunity to put La Salle away but her shot went wide and the match was sent into overtime.
The game-winner finally came in the 103rd minute when McCarty fired a shot from 20 yards out on the left side of the field to net the ball past the keeper and into the lower right corner. The goal was the senior's third of the season.
Overall, La Salle out shot the Dragons 14-13. Baeza made a career high seven saves in goal for the Dragons while Jenkins turned away four shots for the Explorers.
Drexel will return to action on Thursday, Aug. 30 when it hosts Saint John's for a 7 p.m. match at Vidas Field.
