Hennessy's Two Goals Power Women's Soccer to 2-1 Victory Against St. John's

PHILADELPHIA – Kiera Hennessy powered the Drexel women's soccer team with two goals as the Dragons defeated the St. John's Red Storm at Vidas Field on Thursday night by a score of 2-1. Both goals were assisted by senior Emma Heckenberg and the win improved the Dragons record to 2-1-2 on the season.

The Drexel offense got off to a quick start, with shots from Shaelyn McCarty and Hennessy in the first five minutes but St. John's retaliated promptly. A break away chance by the Red Storm's Zsani Kajan down the right side of the field was turned away by goalkeeper Libby Baeza, one of her three saves in the first half.

Later in the half, a misplay by the Red Storm goalkeeper, Meredith Reinhardt, gave the Dragons an opportunity with a corner kick. Heckenberg took the kick and planted it in front of the net where Hennessy was able to head it over the keeper for a score, making it 1-0 Dragons.

The Dragons found themselves in a similar situation in the 19th minute with another corner from the right side of the field. Hennessy was able to score on the header for a second time, once again with the assist from Heckenberg. The pair of goals gave Hennessy her second and third goals of the season, respectively.

St. John's got some more chances before the end of the half, with shots from Kayla Mesaros and Samie Scaffidi, but were unable to bury a goal, making it 2-0 at the break.

In the second half, Drexel played strong defense to preserve their lead.

St. John's goal didn't come until the 88^th minute when Kajan hit a penalty kick to the left side of the net for a goal, bringing the game to 2-1.

The Dragons locked down after that, dominating possession for the last few minutes of play to seal the victory.

On the night, the Dragons out shot the Red Storm 14-12, including 10-5 shots on goal. Baeza ended up with four saves in goal for Drexel, while Jordan Kamp led the game with five saves for St. John's.

Later this weekend Drexel will take on Maryland at Vidas Field on Sunday, September 2 at 2 p.m.
