PHILADELPHIA – Shaelyn McCarty scored her fifth goal of the season to help propel the Drexel women's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime win against the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon on Soccer Stadium at Patriots Point.
McCarty got the first shot of the game three minutes after the opening whistle to set the tone for the Dragons. The remainder of the half was evenly played with Charleston just barely out shooting the Dragons, 4-2. The Dragons had an opportunity off the foot of Keunna Dill in the 33rd minute, however, Charleston's keeper Genevieve Henderson made the save to keep the match tied, 0-0.
The go-ahead goal came in the 55th minute when Charleston's Laura Ortega hit a free kick from the left wing that bounced in the box and into the upper right corner for the 1-0 advantage. The Dragons, though, did not give up as they tied things up in the 68th minute with a header from freshman Morgan Rees. The assist was credited to senior Emma Heckenberg who crossed the ball in from the left wing. Rees later had a chance at the game-winner in the 85th minute, but the header went wide as the match went into overtime.
After 106 minutes of action, Drexel finally pulled ahead in double overtime when McCarty fired a shot from 20-yards out that bounced between Charleston's defenders and into the net.
The Dragons out shot the Cougars, 12-8 while goalkeeper Libby Baeza made four saves in net for the Dragons.
Drexel will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 when it travels to William & Mary for a 2 p.m. match.
