Charleston, S.C. - Troy Harper made all three free throws with 1.1 seconds to go as Drexel rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to defeat the College of Charleston, 79-78. The win snapped Charleston's 22-game home winning streak. That streak was the second longest in the nation entering the game. Drexel is now 8-10 overall and 2-3 in CAA play. The Cougars, the defending league champs, are now 13-4 and 2-2.
Harper had a chance to tie the game with six seconds. He scored and was fouled, but missed his free throw. Drexel fouled right away and Marquise Pointer made one of two from the line with 5.6 seconds remaining. Harper grabbed the board and raced down the court. He was tripped as he flung a shot up at the basket. After the foul was called, the referees went to the monitor and gave Harper three free throws. He made all three, giving the Dragons only their second win at Charleston since the Cougars joined the CAA.
Drexel trailed by 13 at 70-57 with 8:20 to play after a Zep Jasper three-pointer. The Dragons answered with a 9-0 run. Trevor John started it with a three-pointer and Alihan Demir nailed two straight three-pointers. Charleston answered and went up by nine with 3:44 to go when Jasper scored on a lay-in. That ended up being the last field goal of the game for Charleston as Drexel ended the game with an 11-1 run.
Trevor John led the Dragons with 22 points and was 5-for-9 from deep. Alihan Demir added 20 points, while Harper had 17 and six assists. Grant Riller led the Cougars with 18 points. The Dragons shot 48 percent from the field in the game. The Cougars shot 55 percent, but the Drexel defense held the Cougars to just 44 percent in the second half.
Drexel will look to sweep its road trip when it faces UNCW on Saturday.
