Wrestling’s Goodhart Finishes Fifth, O’Malley Takes Seventh at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Senior Joey Goodhart and freshman Michael O'Malley opened the new year on a high note as they medaled at the 2019 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Goodhart placed fifth in the heavyweight bracket while O'Malley became Drexel's first freshman to ever place as he took seventh in the 174-lb bracket from McKenzie Arena at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
"I'm really proud of Joey and Mickey," said Drexel Head Coach Matt Azevedo. "They showed a lot of heart battling back and placing in two of the toughest brackets in the tournament."
JOEY GOODHART
No. 17-ranked Joey Goodhart, in the heavyweight bracket, won the fifth-place bout over No. 6-ranked Billy Miller of Virginia Tech by a 4-3 decision. Goodhart earned all four of his points in the third period with two escapes and a takedown as he rode out the clock. It comes as his third top-8 finish after taking second at the Keystone Classic and 8th at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational earlier this year.
Goodhart started Wednesday with a 2-0 decision over Binghamton's Jack Doyle. Tied 0-0 heading into the third, Goodhart earned an escape in addition to a point for riding time to win 2-0.
Following that, the Drexel senior went up against Stanford's Haydn Maley. Tied 2-2 heading into the third period, Goodhart earned an escape in the early goings to go up 3-2. Maley went up 4-3 with a takedown before Goodhart ended the bout with a pin at 6:50.
Goodhart dropped a 13-6 decision in the consolation semifinals to No. 11 Matt Voss of George Mason. Vos went up 6-2 in the first behind three takedowns. Goodhart earned two escapes in the first and another two in the third to go along with a takedown for six points in the bout. The loss moved Goodhart to the fifth-place heavyweight bout against No. 6 Billy Miller.
Goodhart went 5-2 at the tournament as he improved to 19-6 on the season.
MICHAEL O'MALLEY GOES 5-2, TAKES SEVENTH PLACE
Michael O'Malley, in the 174-lb bracket, took seventh place at the Southern Scuffle after defeating Binghamton's Vincent Deprez in on Wednesday night to become Drexel' first freshman to ever place at the tournament. The Drexel freshman led 2-1 after a first period takedown. After a scoreless second, O'Malley went up 3-1 with an escape in the third. Deprez tied it up with a takedown before a late escape by O'Malley to pull back ahead 4-3. He gained an additional point for riding time as he won 5-3.
O'Malley began Wednesday with a takedown and pin of Edinboro's Jacob Oliver before he dropped a 9-4 decision to NC State's Trent Hidlay. O'Malley led 2-1 in the first after an early takedown before Hidlay tied it up in the second with an escape. Tied 2-2 going into the third, Hidlay earned seven points behind a takedown, nearfall and riding time to win 9-4.
That loss moved O'Malley to the seventh-place bout where he went up against Binghamton's Vincent Deprez and eventually claim the victory.
Overall, O'Malley went 5-2 at the tournament with two pins and three wins by decision.
STEPHEN LOISEAU
Though Loiseau moved on after going 2-1 on Tuesday with two technical fall wins, the senior did not wrestle on the second day due to an injury sustained in his quarterfinal bout.
