Schmidt Sets Drexel's 54-hole Record as Dragons Finish Fifth at Elon

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Drexel's Connor Schmidt set a Drexel 54-hole record by shooting 14-under par at the Elon Phoenix Invitational which finished play on Tuesday afternoon. Schmidt opened the tournament with a six-under par 65 and shot 67 in both his second and third round, shattering the old record of six-under par, which he set last season. Schmidt finished second overall with his 199, while the Dragons placed fifth with an 847, five shots under par.
On Tuesday, Schmidt led the way with his four-under 67. Alex Butler, Jeffrey Cunningham and Angelo Giantsopoulos each recorded a 75. Giantsopoulos, who had two sub-par rounds in the event, tied for 14th place overall at 209. Cunningham finished the tournament at 219 (+6), Butler shot 221 (+8) and Stephen Cerbara had a 223 (+10). Despite shooting 292 on Tuesday, the Dragons final score of 847 (-5) was the third lowest score to par for a Drexel team in a 54-hole event.
Gardner-Webb picked up the victory at Elon by shooting 833 (-19). The Runnin' Bulldogs were one shot better than Morehead State. Appalachian State finished third (-9), while Elon was fourth at seven-under par, two shots ahead of Drexel. Gardner-Webb's Jake Scruggs was the medalist. He shot 194, five shots better than Schmidt, and had a 61 in the second round.
