Women’s Basketball Drops Nonconference Test at No. 18/20 DePaul

CHICAGO – The Drexel University women's basketball team (2-1) dropped its first game of the 2019-20 season to the No. 18/20 DePaul University Blue Demons (1-0) on Monday evening in the second round of the Preseason WNIT from McGrath-Phillips Arena in Chicago, Ill. by a final of 81-57.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Bailey Greenberg led Drexel with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting, her third-straight game as the squad's scoring leader.
- Sophomore Keishana Washington finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-2 from deep.
- Sophomore Maura Hendrixson had five steals (tying her career high), four rebounds, a block and hit a three-pointer.
-Senior Niki Metzel and junior Hannah Nihill each finished with six points while junior Kayla Bacon had five.
-Senior Ana Ferariu had four points, a team-high three assists and tied for a team-high four boards.
- Trailing by 21 in the second quarter, Drexel cut the deficit down to 10 at halftime after shooting 62.5% in the final 10 minutes of the half but was not able to get the game down into single digits in the second half.
GAMEPLAY
DePaul came out aggressive on both ends of the floor with a full-court press and quick-paced offense to jump out to a 30-12 lead at the end of the first quarter as the Blue Demons shot 12-of-17 from the floor. Drexel had eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play as DePaul controlled the tempo.
Things changed in the second quarter with the Dragons putting together an 8-0 run early behind baskets from Greenberg, freshman AJ Davis, Washington and Metzel to get the Blue Demons to call a timeout midway through the period. Back-to-back baskets from Metzel cut DePaul's lead to 10 with under a minute. A trey from the Blue Demons followed by a three-pointer from Hendrixson at the buzzer put the Dragons only down by 10 at the half after trailing by as many as 21 early in the second quarter. Drexel shot 10-of-16 from the floor in the second quarter as Greenberg led the Dragons with 12 points at the break.
It was a mostly even third quarter though the Blue Demons were able to add four to their lead. Washington hit two treys in the quarter along with another long two-pointer for eight points in the period. DePaul held a 62-48 lead after three.
DePaul was able to keep its offensive and defensive pressure up over the course of the full 40 minutes. Drexel hit just three shots in the final 10 minutes as the Blue Demons improved to 2-0 and the Dragons fell to 2-1.

- Drexel shot 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the floor, 4-of-11 (35.4%) from three-point range and 7-of-10 (70.0%) from the line.
DRAGON DEBUTS
- Freshmen Hetta Saatman and Maria Ferariu each made their collegiate debuts.
- Saatman entered with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter, had a block and pulled down one rebound.
- Ferariu appeared for the final 1:31.

Drexel will now host the Pacific Tigers in a consolation matchup on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. from the DAC.
