PHILADELPHIA – Seventh-ranked Drexel Women's Squash ushered in its ninth season of varsity competition with an 8-1 win over No. 19 Franklin & Marshall at the Kline & Specter Squash Center on Saturday. The victory advances the Dragons (1-0) to the winner's final of the Pennsylvania Squash Classic and a date with nearby rival Penn tomorrow morning.
The first six positions on the ladder belonged to Drexel, who racked up eight total victories in straight games. Half of the Dragons' victories came from newcomers who were making their debuts on Saturday.
Alina Bushma handed Audrey Berling an 11-6, 12-10, 11-7 win at the top position for her first collegiate victory. Hannah Blatt knocked off Emily Bartos in three games – 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 – at the second position.
Freshman Ciara Richards opened her account in University City with an 11-3, 11-5, 11-3 sweep of Katherine Galambos at the fourth position. Fellow freshman Lara Varma also notched an 11-8, 11-9, 11-0 sweep against Pratiksha Mishra at the sixth spot. Stephanie Ryan's 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 triumph over Samiray Sankaran in the fifth-seeded flight was sandwiched between the two freshmen.
Katerina Cummings started her freshman campaign with an 11-4, 11-8, 11-4 win over Grace Smith in the eighth position. Emma MacGillivray rounded out the top-nine of the ladder by making short work of Julia Bevan – 11-4, 11-1, 11-5.
Drexel and No. 8 Penn contest the winner's final of the Pennsylvania State Classic tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at the Kline & Specter Squash Center. The two sides are meeting in the exact same situation for the third year in a row with the Quakers winning both prior meetings. However, the Dragons notched their first-ever win over Penn last February in the Howe Cup.
