No. 7 Women’s Squash Drops Tightly-Contested Match with No. 8 Penn, 5-4

PHILADELPHIA – No. 8 Penn rallied from a 4-2 deficit to top the seventh-ranked Drexel women's squash team by a 5-4 margin in the winner's final of the Pennsylvania Squash Classic at the Kline & Specter Squash Center on Sunday.
The Quakers' Ashley Manning overcame an early hole to provide the decisive fifth point from the fourth position. Brooke Herring led the match 2-1 (4-11, 12-10, 11-8) before Manning rallied with 11-9 and 11-5 wins in the fourth and fifth games, respectively.
Drexel (1-1) earned victories at the top-two spots in the ladder, both coming in straight games. In the top-ranked match, Karina Tyma cruised past Jessica Davis by an 11-9, 11-4, 11-5 score. Alina Bushma scored an 11-2, 11-7, 11-8 victory against Jamila Tamer.
Ciara Richards added a sweep from the fifth position, taking down Lindsay Stanley by an 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 score. Stephanie Ryan overcame a first-game hiccup for a 3-1 win in the No. 7 slot. Ryan dropped the first game, 11-7, before 11-9, 11-8 and 11-1 victories.
Amina Tamer keyed the comeback for Penn (2-0) with a three-game win over Katerina Cummings in the ninth slot. Julia Buchholz then tied the match at 4-4 with a five-game marathon victory over Hannah Blatt in the third position. Buccholz won the first game, 11-2, and the two competitors traded wins from there.
The Dragons have ample opportunities to bounce back next weekend with three matches in three days. Drexel hosts No. 4 Stanford on Friday at 6 p.m. before a match against sixth-ranked Columbia at the Kline & Specter Squash Center on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Dragons wrap up their week on Sunday with a 2 p.m. road match at No. 3 Princeton.
