PHILADELPHIA – The No. 8 Drexel women's squash team erased an early 3-1 deficit in its 5-4 come-from-behind victory over fourth-ranked Stanford at the Kline & Specter Squash Center on Friday evening. The match came down to a fifth and decisive set at the No. 1 position, which Karina Tyma took to seal the victory.
The Dragons (2-1) won four of the last five matches to notch their first win in five tries against the Cardinal (1-1). Lara Varma keyed the rally with a five-set win in the No. 9 position. Varma needed a rally of her own to win the match after falling behind 2-1 (11-7, 9-11, 4-11). She took a close fourth game 14-12 before winning 11-6 in the fifth.
Stephanie Ryan and Samantha Moadel then went the distance in the No. 8 slot with Ryan prevailing 11-6, 10-12, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6 to knot the match score at 3-3. Drexel then regained the lead when Brooke Herring topped Amita Gondi in three games (12-10, 11-7, 11-7) at the fourth position.
Stanford leveled the match with Chloe Chemtob's five-set win against Anna Hughes in the fifth position. The two went back and forth throughout the night with Chemtob prevailing 11-6, 6-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-3.
Tyma and Elena Wagenmans dueled with the intensity that underscored the situation. Tyma took the opening game, 11-7, but Wagenmans answered with an identical 11-7 result. Drexel's No. 1 went ahead again with an 11-6 victory in the third game, but dropped a tight fourth game, 13-11. With the entire match on the line, Tyma prevailed in the fifth, 11-7.
The Dragons opened the night with a win at the No. 2 position. Alina Bushma swept Casey Wong – 11-7, 11-4, 11-4. The Cardinal answered with three-straight victories. Hannah Blatt dropped a four gamer from the third position, Ciara Richards lost in three games at the sixth slot, and Ona Prokes lost in four in the No. 7 match.
Bushma, Ryan and Tyma extended their undefeated starts to the season. Bushma and Ryan own three wins apiece. Tyma is 2-0.
