PHILADELPHIA – Eighth-ranked Drexel Women's Squash edged past No. 6 Columbia on a final-ball winner from Brooke Herring in a tightly-contested 5-4 win at the Kline & Specter Squash Center on Saturday. Herring won in five games at the No. 4 position to replicate the Dragons' late-match theatrics from yesterday.
Drexel (3-1) and the Lions (2-1) split the first eight matches of the day with Drexel winning at the first, second, fifth and sixth positions. Bushma extended the unblemished start to her collegiate career with a fourth-straight victory. The sophomore from Kyiv, Ukraine won in four games against Erica McGillicuddy in the No. 2 slot – 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7.
Ciara Richards used a fast start in the No. 6 match to down Bunny Fox in five games. Richards led 12-10, 11-6 after the first two games then weathered successive 11-6, 11-4 setbacks. The freshman got the better of Fox in the fifth game, winning 15-13.
Karina Tyma won her third-straight match to start the season with an 11-9, 12-10, 11-5 sweep of Habiba Mohamed at the top position. Anna Hughes also won in three games at the fifth position. She topped Ellie McVeigh by an 11-8, 12-10, 11-3 score.
Herring and Jui Kalgutkar went back-and-forth in their five-gamer from the No. 4 position. Their individual match was as even as the overall team match with no game being won by more than three points. Herring took the first game 11-9 before an 11-8 setback in the second. She then posted an 11-8 victory of her own but dropped the fourth game 11-9. With the fates of both teams in the balance, the sophomore from Victoria, British Columbia emerged from the fifth game with an 11-9 win.
Hannah Blatt dropped her match in four games, losing 11-9, 11-8, 10-12, 11-5 to Nicole Kendall in the third position. Ona Prokes won the first two games of her match against Cynthia Cao at the No. 7 position but ultimately lost in five games -- 1-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-1. Stephanie Ryan also fell in four games (9-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-3) at the No. 8 position. Doria Chen topped Lara Varma 11-4, 11-6, 11-9 in the ninth slot.
The Dragons go on the road hunting a third-successive top-10 victory tomorrow when they travel to No. 3 Princeton for a 2 p.m. match.
