Women’s Basketball Defeats Richmond at the DAC on Sunday, 58-52

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's basketball team (3-2) defeated the University of Richmond Spiders (4-2) on Sunday afternoon from the Daskalakis Athletic Center by a final of 58-52.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Down by eight points early in the first quarter, the Dragons fought to tie it up at halftime, 27-27, before pulling out the 58-52 win behind a big game from senior Bailey Greenberg and a clutch second half from sophomore Keishana Washington.
* Greenberg scored a game-high 25 points including 16 in the first half. She finished 11-of-20 from the floor. Greenberg also tied for a team-high five rebounds and notched a team-best three steals.
* Washington finished with 11 points as the only other Dragon in double figures; all of her points came in the second half including eight in the fourth quarter.
* Senior Aubree Brown finished with a game-high seven assists, bringing her to 398 for her career.
* Senior Mariah Leonard scored six points off the bench while tying for a team-high five boards. She also notched the Dragons' only block.
GAMEPLAY
In the first quarter, the shots would not fall for the Dragons while Richmond knocked down six of its first nine from the floor on the other end to jump out to an eight-point lead, 14-6. But Richmond then went on a four-plus minute scoring drought while Drexel cut the deficit in half to trail by four at the end of the quarter, 14-10.
After six points in the first quarter from Greenberg, the Drexel senior scored 10 of the team's 17 second-quarter points as the Dragons tied it up at halftime, 27-27. Drexel shot 57.1% in the second frame while Greenberg had 16 points at the break to lead all scorers.
Trailing by two with 6:14 to play in the third, the Dragons used an 8-0 run to regain and push the lead to six, 40-34, over the next two and a half minutes.
Richmond would not go away as the game went to the fourth quarter. Washington provided an offensive lift for Drexel, scoring eight of her 11 in the final 10 minutes including back-to-back shots to turn a one-point lead into a six-point advantage with 2:56 remaining, 53-47.
The Spiders were able to trim it down once again to one point with just about 90 seconds left but Washington hit three free-throws down the stretch to bump it back up to four as Greenberg hit the final two. The Dragons escaped with the 58-52 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Drexel shot 41.5% from the floor (22-of-53), 18.2% from deep (2-of-11) and 75.0% from the free-throw line (12-of-16).
* The Dragons outrebounded the Spiders, 31-29, moving to 3-0 on the year when they outrebound their opponent.
* Drexel scored 30 points in the paint, the team's second time this season with at least 30.
* The Dragons forced 23 Richmond turnovers which turned into 24 points for Drexel. DU has forced 20+ turnovers in three of its five games.
* DU made a season-high 14 steals, its fourth time this year in double figures.

With no midweek games during the week of Thanksgiving, the Dragons will now gear up for the 26th Annual Saint Joseph's Hawk Classic as Drexel takes on Buffalo on Saturday, Nov. 30 (2 p.m.) followed by Saint Joseph's on Sunday, Dec. 1 (2 p.m.) in Philadelphia, Pa. Both games will be played at Saint Joseph's Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena.
