Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Buffalo

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's basketball team (3-3) fought back but came up just short against the University at Buffalo Bulls (5-2) on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the 26th annual Hawk Classic, hosted by Saint Joseph's University from Hagan Arena in Philadelphia, Pa. by a final of 63-59.
HIGHLIGHTS
*Senior Bailey Greenberg led Drexel with 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also tied for a game-high eight rebounds. She sits four points shy of 12th on Drexel's all-time scoring leaderboard.
* Senior Mariah Leonard finished with a career-high 11 points behind 5-of-9 from the floor and 1-of-2 from the line along with two boards and one steal.
* Junior Kayla Bacon tied her career-high with eights points with two field goals and 4-of-4 from line. She also had a career-high four assists and grabbed two rebounds.
* With her second assist on the day with 4:27 left in the second quarter, senior Aubree Brown became the fourth Dragon to record 400 career assists. She finished with seven assists and is now at 405 for her career. Brown also notched six points and a game-high four steals.
GAMEPLAY
Leonard put on a performance in the fourth quarter, scoring all 11 of her career-high total in the final frame. With 6:34, she made a layup to get the Dragons within three points and then 20 seconds later she took a charge on the other end. On that next Drexel possession, junior Hannah Nihill scored to cut the deficit down to one with 5:58 to play, 55-54. DU also trailed by one with 4:32 left after another Leonard layup, but Buffalo was able to push it back up to four. The Dragons stayed within a score for the remainder of the contest but could not even up the score as Buffalo held on for the 63-59 win on the neutral court.
Buffalo's Dyaisha Fair finished with a game-high 26 points, the most the Dragons have allowed to an individual all season. She was 4-of-8 from deep and 6-of-15 from the floor but also hit 10-of-13 from the line.
Early on, Drexel held an 8-4 lead with 4:20 left in the first quarter. But a 7-2 run by the Bulls to end the first period saw the Dragons trailing by one after the first 10 minutes of play. Greenberg scored the final six points for Drexel.
Buffalo stretched its lead to eight points midway through the second quarter at 26-18. Just half a minute later with 4:27 left, Brown made an in-bound pass to Greenberg underneath for her 400th career assist to get the Dragons within six. Sophomore Kate Connolly then drained a three to cut that in half, 26-23. Hendrixson also hit a three-pointer with under a minute to play to keep the edge at three in favor of Buffalo before the Bulls made a layup to take the five-point lead into halftime, 31-26.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Drexel shot 25-of-69 (36.2%) from the floor, 2-of-16 (12.5%) from three-point range and 7-of-10 (70.0%) from the free-throw line.
* With 11 steals, Drexel had double-digit steals for the fourth-straight game and five of six times on the season.
* The Dragons pounded the paint on Saturday, outscoring Buffalo 44-22 inside the key. The 44 points in the paint were a season high.
* DU also led second-chance points, 18-12 while Buffalo had the rebounding edge, 41-33.
* Nearly half of Drexel's rebounds came on the offensive end (16).
* Drexel also got a season-high 25 points on the bench, outscoring Buffalo's reserves (15) by nine.
* Drexel struggled from deep, going 2-of-16 from three-point range. Buffalo connected on 7-of-23.
