Women’s Basketball Defeats Quinnipiac in 2019-20 Season Opener, 66-62

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2019-20 campaign with a road win over the Quinnipiac University Bobcats (0-1) on Tuesday evening from the People's United Center in Hamden, Conn. by a final of 66-62.
HIGHLIGHTS
-Senior Bailey Greenberg set single-game school records for makes and attempts at the free-throw line, going 19-for-21 as she finished with 31 points, tying a career high.
-Greenberg also added 12 rebounds for a double-double, the ninth of her career and sixth on the road.
-Sophomore Maura Hendrixson hit six three-pointers for 18 points on the night to set new career highs in both categories.
-In the road win at Quinnipiac, Drexel avenged its season-opening home loss from a year ago to the Bobcats, who have made the last five NCAA Tournaments.
GAMEPLAY
After a slow start from the field, the Dragons made their final 4-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the line to get within two at the end of the first quarter. Quinnipiac hit seven shots to lead, 15-13.
Following four field goals in the first quarter, Drexel doubled its output in the second quarter to outscore the Bobcats, 20-13. Hendrixson knocked down three first-half three-pointers, including two in the second quarter, to provide some relief off the bench. Greenberg had eight points in the period to put her as the only player in double figures at halftime with 13 as the Dragons held a five-point edge, 33-28.
Hendrixson knocked down two more treys in the third quarter as Greenberg also added six points behind a field goal and four free throws. Quinnipiac was able to tie up the affair at 42-42 with 3:13 to play in the quarter before taking a one-point lead 30 seconds later. Drexel regained the lead with 1:34 left behind two Greenberg free throws and never gave it up again over the final 11:34 in the contest.
After starting 11-of-11 from the line, Greenberg missed her first free throw with 4:34 to play in the fourth quarter. Following the miss, she went 8-of-9 to finish with school records for makes (19) and attempts (21) in a single game. Up one with 2:46 to play, junior Hannah Nihill made Drexel's first field goal of the quarter to put the Dragons back up by three. Hendrixson added her sixth and final three-pointer with 1:01 on the clock as Drexel held on for the 66-62 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
-Drexel led bench points, 24-15, and points off turnovers, 15-6.
-DU outrebounded Quinnipiac, 43-35. It was a shared effort on the boards as eight Dragons had at least three rebounds each.
-Drexel had 11 steals on the night including five Dragons with two each.
DRAGON DEBUTS
-Freshmen AJ Davis and Brianne Borcky each made their collegiate debuts for the Dragons. Davis had a block and three rebounds in six-plus minutes while Borcky had two steals and three boards in 12-plus minutes.
NEXT UP
Drexel returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 for the squad's home opener at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa. against Davidson to begin the Preseason WNIT Tournament. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
