Women’s Basketball Outlasts Villanova in OT, 54-52

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's basketball team (5-3) defeated the Villanova University Wildcats (3-4) by a final of 54-52 in overtime on Wednesday evening from the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Senior Bailey Greenberg scored the game-winner with 4.5 seconds left in overtime. Villanova got the ball back but turned it over before fouling Greenberg with 0.9 on the clock. Greenberg made the first. She tried to intentionally miss the second but was called for a lane violation though the Dragons still held on to win by two.
* The Dragons led by 12 points with 3:47 left in the third quarter before the Wildcats tied it up with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
* Still up by four with under a minute to play in regulation, Villanova had a breakaway looking to cut the edge in half before sophomore Maura Hendrixson was called for an intentional foul. VU's Madison Siegrist hit both free throws before Mary Gedaka scored on the next possession to tie it up.
* Greenberg led the Dragons with 20 points. It marked her fifth time in eight games this season scoring at least 20 points. She has finished in double figures in every contest.
* Junior Hannah Nihill put up 10 points with five rebounds and four assists.
* Senior Aubree Brown had six rebounds, four assists and two steals. She moved into third place on Drexel's all-time assists list and now has 418 on her career. Her fourth assist on the night was the game-winner to Greenberg as she inbounded the ball from the sideline.
* Sophomore Keishana Washington totaled nine points with five boards.
* Senior Niki Metzel pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds and added eight points, two assists, two steals and one block.
* Before the game, Drexel Head Coach Denise Dillon met Villanova Head Coach Harry Perretta at midcourt to recognize the latter who is in the midst of his 42nd and final season with the Wildcats after announcing his intention to retire at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season. Dillon played for Perretta's Wildcats from 1993-96 before launching her coaching career with Villanova as an assistant coach from 1997-01.
GAMEPLAY
Q1 / Villanova went on an 8-0 run to lead 10-4 at the first media timeout. But the Dragons were able to tie it up and then take the lead when Nihill completed a three-point play to make it 13-12. Hendrixson hit a trey at the buzzer to give DU a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Q2 / The Wildcats were able to go on another 8-0 run in the second quarter to tie it up 24-24 before taking a 26-24. The Dragons scored the final five points of the half including a three-pointer from Washington to own a three-point advantage at the break, 29-26. DU forced 11 Wildcat turnovers in the first half including five in the last 5:26 of the second quarter. Drexel was able to take care of the ball, committing only three miscues in the opening half.
Q3 / Drexel went on a 6-0 run to take a 35-28 lead, forcing VU to call a timeout at 5:37 to go in the period. That run built into a 13-2 run as the Dragons took a 42-30 lead. Villanova scored the final four points of the third quarter as Drexel led 42-34.
Q4 / Drexel struggled from the floor in the fourth quarter, going 1-of-15 shooting in the final 10 minutes. Following Nihill's field goal with 8:12 to play, VU went on 12-2 run to send the game into overtime.
OT / Greenberg scored seven of the eight Drexel points in overtime as she took over for the Dragons. Villanova scored the first basket of the five-minute period as DU found itself trailing for the first time since the score was 14-13 with 1:24 left in the first quarter. Brown found Greenberg slipping underneath on what would be the eventual game-winner as Greenberg scored on a layup with 4.5 seconds to play.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Drexel shot 30.9% (21-of-68) from the floor, 17.6% (3-of-17) from three-point range and 64.3% (9-of-14) from the free-throw line.
* The Dragons committed just nine turnovers, the fewest all season. Drexel led Villanova in points off turnovers, 16-6.
* Drexel also led second-chance points, 7-4, fast break points, 8-7, and bench scoring, 13-6.
* Drexel is now 2-5 against Villanova all-time.
* Drexel has now won two-straight overtime games dating back to March 15, 2019 (W, 73-69 vs. Northeastern).
* The win come as the 299th home victory all-time for the Dragons.
