NEW YORK - No. 13 Drexel men's squash fell to No. 7 Columbia on Friday afternoon in a road match, 8-1. The Dragons only point of the match came from Matias Knudsen in the No. 2 spot.
Emil Snyman debuted his season at the No. 9 spot and started strong, winning the first game before losing a close three games, 5-11,11-7,11-9,11-6.
Filip Krueger and Noel Heaton stepped up playing at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Krueger pushed his opponent very close, applying consistent pressure, losing in four well contested games. Heaton showed his volleying capabilities, especially in the second game which he won, 11-8. Heaton, however, lacked consistency to make more of an impression in the match.
The match of the day belonged to Matias Knudsen's four game win over the former No. 1 ranked English junior, James Wyatt. Knudsen lost the first game after being 10-6 game ball up. This surprising loss gave Knudsen the spark he needed to take the next two games and gain a 10-3 lead in the fourth game. After a well-structured rally, which Knudsen controlled, Wyatt went the wrong way before diving and took Knudsen's racquet with him. This ended in the point being replayed and was followed by a very long rally. Knudsen then used a backhand drop volley to put an end to the rally and secure the victory.
Last on was captain Bransten Ming at the No. 1 spot who played his match of the season thus far, taking Velavan Senthikumar the distance. He came from behind twice to level at one game each and two games each before he was edged out in the fifth game narrowly, 11-9,4-11,11-6,6-11,11-6.
The Dragons will regroup and get right back into it when they return home tomorrow for a 2 p.m. match against Navy at the Kline & Specter Squash Center.
