PHILADELPHIA – No. 13 Drexel men's squash defeated No. 12 Navy on Friday afternoon to advance in the Hoehn Cup semifinals. Semifinals are set for tomorrow, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. against No. 9 Virginia.
Ryan Leslie, Noel Heaton and Dylan Kachur got the team off to an excellent start with three hard fought matches. Leslie was particularly impressive, making his debut at nationals with a 9-11,11-5,11-3,11-8 win in the No. 9 spot.
Next up on the courts was Filip Krueger. After his opponent clawed back from Krueger's 2-1 lead to tie it at 2-2, Krueger got to business and gathered a good lead to secure the match 11-5 in the final game. The Dragons needed one more match for the win. Unfortunately, Nathaniel Chan, after a fast start, ran out of steam losing his match, 3-1. Next on was freshman Matias Knudsen, who looked to be slow out of the blocks, however, his grit and determination shone through as he dug deep to win the match for himself and the Dragons.
Last on was Royston Raymond, Luke Willemse and Bransten Ming. Raymond lost 3-0 while Willemse and Ming went down in very tight matches going to five games.
The Dragons will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. against No. 9 Virginia. The winner of tomorrow's match will advance to the finals on Sunday at 11 a.m. against the winner of the St. Lawrence-George Washington match. For draws and more information about the Hoehn Cup, click here.
