NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Luke Willemse clinched the match in the No. 4 spot as the No. 13 Drexel men's squash team defeated No. 9 Virginia in the College Squash Men's Team Nationals semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons will now take on No. 15 George Washington in the Hoehn Cup finals tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Ryan Leslie put in a high-spirited performance facing tough opposition. He clawed the third game back before going down in four games. Dylan Kachur put in a characteristically strong performance, winning a close three game match. With the first round of matches tied, Noel Heaton got off to a sluggish start, going two games down before he regrouped and got the next two back. The match was reaching its peak in the fifth with lots of physicality. Heaton gathered a strong lead before being pegged back as momentum swung against him. With an error on match ball, UVA gained the ascendancy at two matches to one.
Down 2-1, the Dragons came out firing. Matias Knudsen and Filip Krueger played determined squash clinching both their matches while Nathaniel Chan went down in straight games.
Tied at three matches a piece, Bransten Ming stepped up to the occasion with a straight game win. Meanwhile, Royston Raymond put in a valiant performance narrowly losing in five games. All hopes then rested on senior Luke Willemse's shoulders as he played his usual extravagant squash, keeping his opponent and the crowd on their toes. He did not disappoint as he won an extremely tense match on a clinical crosscourt drive to the enchantment of the Drexel crowd.
The Dragons will return to action tomorrow, Feb. 17 when they battle No. 15 George Washington in the Hoehn Cup finals at 11 a.m. For more information about the College Squash Men's Team Nationals, click here.
