NEW HAVEN, CONN. – No. 13 Drexel men's squash streak came to an end today as No. 15 George Washington won 6-3 in the 2019 College Men's Team National Championships Hoehn Cup (B Division) Finals on Sunday morning.
Noel Heaton played a flawless match to win impressively in straight games. Meanwhile, Ryan Leslie and Dylan Kachur went down in straight games after giving their all.
Filip Krueger started strongly taking a neck and neck first game in extra points. His opponent regrouped taking the next game quickly and the third game after a back-and-forth game. The fourth game was close, but his opponent was not to be denied, closing the match down. Meanwhile, Matias Knudsen once again stepped up taking his opponent the distance aiming to keep the Dragons' match alive. He twice came from a game behind. Knudsen displayed some fantastic movement in an intense rally at 9-9 and recovered before slamming a flawless forehand overhead crosscourt into the nick. The game clinching rally followed with a trademark backhand volley drop from Knudsen to take the game and level at two games all. Unfortunately, this game took its toll with Knudsen losing the fifth game decisively. At the same time, Nathaniel Chan lost in straight games.
Luke Willemse played determined squash taking the first game before his opponent levelled. With the match levelled, the final game was very intense, reaching its peak at 8-8 before Willemse saw the finish line and converted the next three points, finishing his collegiate squash career well. Captain Bransten Ming finished off his collegiate career with a strong 3-1 victory. After a hard first game loss going to extra points, he fought back well to win the next three games, each game with more confidence. An excellent win to end his collegiate career with. Royston Raymond fought hard but unfortunately lost a tough match in straight games.
Drexel will return to action when they compete in the Individual Championships beginning on Friday, March 1.
