HARTFORD, CONN. – No. 8 Drexel women's squash defeated No. 6 Penn in the Howe Cup College Association National Championship consolation match, 6-3. This win marks the Dragons' first win over Penn in the women's program and ranks them No. 7 in the nation, the highest in program history.
The Dragons got off to a good start with Stephanie Ryan finding a balance between brilliant height, length and backhand drop shots. Meanwhile, Emma MacGillivray came bouncing back after a tough first game to take the next two games, before losing a close fourth game. MacGillivray, however, bounced back strongly in the fifth game to take the game with authority. Mariam Kamal started quickly, racing to a two-game lead before getting to 9-9 in the third. Unfortunately, Kamal couldn't close the game and the match swung towards the opponent who took the next three games. After the first round of matches the Dragons were up 2-1.
Ona Prokes showed great determination to win the first two games in extra points. This lead proved too much for her Penn opponent as she cruised to a 3-0 victory. Performance of day came from Anna Hughes who came out firing. Hughes showed great determination and courage to put a lot of pressure on her Penn opponent, giving her the upset over Jessica Davis. This win gave the Dragons four matches. Catie Castelli fought hard but could not match her Penn opponent. With the Dragons ahead 4-2 they needed just one more match to win the overall match.
Brooke Herring started off very slowly going two games down and did not look like she was going to win her match. Meanwhile, Captain Fiona Power in contrast started well winning the first two games. However, the third game went down to the wire. Power had a couple of match balls but could not convert them as her opponent won the game in extra points. Meanwhile, Herring was making a great comeback. She took the third game and after a neck-and-neck fourth game, in which Herring managed to save several match balls, the momentum was with the Dragons. Herring played a solid fifth game sealing the overall match for the Dragons. Shortly afterwards, Power won the fourth game of her match easily reinforcing the Dragon's win.
Last on and with the match over, Hannah Blatt lost 3-0 to an exceptional Penn player, Reeham Sedky.
Drexel will return to the courts for Individual Championships beginning March 1.
