Bailey Greenberg Named CAA Player of the Year to Highlight Women's Hoops Awards

RICHMOND, Va. - Drexel junior forward Bailey Greenberg has capped an outstanding regular season by being named the Colonial Athletic Association's Player of the Year, the league announced on Tuesday. Greenberg, who leads the conference in scoring, becomes the second Dragon ever to earn the award and the first since Gabriela Marginean, 10 years ago, also as a junior at the end of the 2008-09 campaign.
Greenberg also earned a First Team All-CAA spot and an All-Defensive nod. Meanwhile, freshman Keishana Washington was named to the All-Rookie Team following a regular season that concluded with five double-figure scoring games in her last eight appearances. The awards were voted on by the league's head coaches.
A native of North Wales, Pa. and a graduate of Archbishop Wood, Greenberg fueled the Dragons throughout the regular season. She was the team's leading scorer in 24 of its 29 games, and reached double figures 26 times. Her 17.9 points per game leads the league, as do her 18.6 a game during conference action. She is in line to become the second Dragon ever to lead the league in scoring for a full season and the first since Michelle Maslowski did it in 2001-02, the first season that Drexel was a member of the CAA.
Greenberg has scored 20 or more points 10 times this season, the most by any Dragon in six years. Five times, she has established a new career high for points scored in a game. Two of her most impressive performances came in CAA action, when she scored 26 at Northeastern on Jan. 18 including a buzzer-beating turnaround jumper to hand the Huskies their first home loss of the year, and when she went 13-for-15 for 31 total points to lead the Dragons over UNCW at the DAC on Jan. 27. In all, she has scored 520 points heading into CAA Tournament action, already the fourth-most ever by a Drexel junior. Her prodigious scoring output has been efficient as well, as her .478 field goal percentage is third in the conference. That mark only improved as the season went along. She knocked down at least 50 percent of her shots in 11 of the Dragons' final 13 games of the regular season, shooting .524 from the field during conference play.
Though her offensive numbers are the most eye-catching, Greenberg was also recognized for being a leader on Drexel's top-ranked defense this season. The Dragons as a team allow just 48.8 points per game, the only team in the nation to give up fewer than 50.0 points per game this season. Greenberg has led Drexel in rebounding, pulling down 7.0 a contest and 5.2 a game on the defensive end. Both figurers rank third in the CAA. Meanwhile, she also places among the league leaders in steals at 1.5 a contest, good for 10th. Greenberg has four double-doubles this year including two - at William & Mary and at UNCW - in CAA play.
A three-time All-CAA honoree, Greenberg became the 12th First Team All-CAA performer in the program's history, and just the second All-Defensive Team member, joining former teammate Kelsi Lidge who earned the distinction last season. Greenberg won four CAA Player of the Week awards during the course of the regular season, the most in the conference and tied with Marginean in 2008-09 for the most ever by a Dragon.
While Greenberg provided the veteran leadership for Drexel, Washington made an immediate impression as a freshman who started nearly every game during the Dragons' 22-7 regular season. Washington is currently fourth on the team with 7.1 points scored per game, While many freshman around the country have been wearing down in the final weeks of the year, Washington has saved some of her best basketball for late in the season. She has eight double-figure scoring games, five of which came in the last eight games. Most recently, Washington put up 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long range, in the win at Towson. Washington set a season high when she poured in 21 at UNCW on Feb. 22 to lead the Dragons in handing the Seahawks their only home loss of the season. She was named the CAA's Rookie of the Week following that performance.
The first Dragon ever to hail from Canada under the tutelage of head coach Denise Dillon, Washington becomes the third international player to earn CAA All-Rookie honors under Dillon and the first since Jasmina Rosseel in 2007-08. She appeared in 27 games and made 26 starts, only coming off the bench for Senior Day.
Greenberg and Washington will lead the Dragons into postseason play beginning on Thursday when the Dragons open their run in the CAA Tournament. The second-seeded Dragons will take on either No. 7 William & Mary or No. 10 College of Charleston at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. Drexel has advanced to the CAA semifinals in six of the last seven years, earning four CAA title game berths in that span and five overall. The Dragons have not lost any game at the Bob Carpenter Center since the 2012-13 season.
