WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Drexel women's tennis team came up just short in its bid to get a notable Colonial Athletic Association victory on Friday as the Dragons fell at UNCW, 4-3. Needing to sweep the final four singles matches in action, the Dragons got three of the four, coming up just short in a three-set loss in the deciding match.
UNCW swept the doubles points, winning 6-0 at No. 1 and 6-2 at No. 3. Singles play also started strong for the Seahawks, who got straight sets victories at No. 5 and No. 6 to move up 3-0 with four singles matches still in action.
Marta Martinez got the Dragons on the board with a solid 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Katka Majorova followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3, making it a 3-2 match with the top two singles pairings still on the courts.
When Salma Ziouti rebounded from a 6-2 first set loss to win at No. 1 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, the Dragons had pulled all the way back even. Ghita Benhadi was still in action at No. 2, but could not finish off the victory as she fell, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The Dragons return to action on April 4 when they open outdoor season at the Vidas Courts by hosting Saint Joseph's. That match is set to get underway at 2 p.m.
