Women's Basketball Sees Road Win Streak Snapped at JMU, 58-47

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The longest road winning streak in the nation came to an end on Thursday night as the Drexel women's basketball team fell at James Madison, 58-47. The Dragons (21-7, 13-4) nevertheless locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament thanks to Towson's loss to Delaware at the same time.
Bailey Greenberg scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, adding a game-high nine rebounds for the Dragons. Keishana Washington scored 11 with five assists and four boards, and Aubree Brown added nine on a perfect 3-for-3 night from long range. She also grabbed six boards with three helpers.
The rest of the Dragons combined to go 2-for-18 from the floor, although they did knock down five of six from the line. Eline Maesschalck finished with three points and a pair of blocks, while Mariah Leonard, Tereza Kracikova and Ana Ferariu added two points apiece.
The Dragons fell behind early, and trailed 17-5 with 2:26 to play in the first quarter. It had been a 6-5 game, with Greenberg netting all five for Drexel, but the Dukes rattled off 11 straight to take early control. In all, the Dragons were just 3-for-11 from the floor in the first quarter and were outrebounded 12-4 as they trailed 19-8 after the opening 10 minutes.
Things settled down from there for Drexel, which held the Dukes off the scoreboard for the first 5:52 of the second quarter. Maesschalck recorded both of her blocks during that stretch, but the Dragons managed just four points in that time, including a pair of free throws for the senior from Belgium. The Dragons would ultimately hold the Dukes to just six points on 3-of-14 shooting in the second quarter, but went just 3-for-11 themselves and trailed, 25-16.
Again in the third quarter, Drexel got off to a strong start. Washington knocked down a pair of free throws and Brown drained a three-pointer from the right wing to make it a 25-21 game with 7:34 remaining in the period. Drexel had an opportunity to cut even closer, but could not score on its next possession and the Dukes nailed a three that put an end to the Dragons' run. They would score seven straight, pulling back out to an 11-point lead by the midway point of the quarter.
Down 14 early in the fourth quarter, the Dragons rattled off five straight on a three by Washington and a bucket by Greenberg. But again, the Dukes had an answer with one of their seven threes in the game, and Drexel would not cut the lead back down to single digits again.
Drexel closes out its regular season on Saturday afternoon when the Dragons visit Towson at 2 p.m. Though Drexel is now locked into the No. 2 seed, the Tigers will have something to play for as they can wrap up the No. 3 seed with a win or a Delaware loss at James Madison. If Towson loses and Delaware wins, the Blue Hens will be three seed and Towson will be seeded fourth. Drexel, which is guaranteed to finish ahead of the Tigers in the standings, have not been swept in a season series by a team that finished behind it since the fourth-place Dragons lost twice to fifth-place Hofstra in 2013-14.
