Men’s Tennis Drop CAA Quarterfinals Match to William & Mary
4/18/2019 4:48:00 PM | Men's Tennis
BURLINGTON, N.C. – The sixth-seeded Drexel men's tennis team took the No. 3 William & Mary Tribe to the wire on Thursday afternoon, but came up just short as the Tribe escaped with a 4-3 victory in the CAA Quarterfinals at the Burlington Tennis Center. The Dragons won the doubles point and at one point held a 3-1 lead overall, but the Tribe won the final three singles matches on the courts to claim the victory.
Xandy Hammitt and Sanil Jagtiani set the tone for the Dragons with their 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, the first match to be completed. Though Sinan Orhon and Gustav Wogen were locked in a tense 6-6 match at No. 1, it was rendered moot when Youssef Lahlou and Juan Manuel Sanchez eked out a 7-6 (3) win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Hammitt again got things started in singles, coming from behind to win a three-set match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 that put Drexel on top 2-0. That come-from-behind match was a sign of the tense play that was to come in singles, where every match either featured a tiebreak or went the full three sets.
After William & Mary got on the board with a win at No. 5 singles, the Dragons made it a 3-1 match with Jagtiani's win at No. 3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Up 3-1 and with the three matches still being contested still very much in doubt, it was looking up for the underdog Dragons.
William & Mary got its comeback underwawy at No. 4, where Oren Vasser held off Alvaro Cruz Chamorro, 7-6 (3), 6-3. After Finbar Talcott took down Lahlou at No. 2, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, everything came down to the match at No. 1 singles. Orhon had won the first set for Drexel 6-4, and took the second set the distance before falling 7-5. But in the third set, William & Mary's Sebastian Quiros took control for a 6-3 win that sealed the win.
The Dragons finish their season with an 11-10 overall mark. Orhon, who earlier in the year became the program's all-time leader in singles and doubles victories, finishies his career with 71 singles victories and 81 doubles wins. That is the most for any Dragon on either the men's or women's side all time.
