MALVERN, Pa. - Junior Connor Schmidt tied a school-record with an eight-under-par 63 as the Dragons played in the opening round of the Wildcat Spring Invitational. The Dragons, the defending champions of the tournament, finished day one of the two-day tournament in the lead.
The Dragons' strong spring continued at White Manor Country Club as the team fired a school-record 12-under par on the par 71 course in Malvern. Three of Drexel's five golfers shot under par, while the other two just missed at 72. Schmidt's record-breaking round featured nine birdies, including five of seven holes on the back nine. Schmidt tied the course record, held by local PGA player Sean O'Hair. He had just one bogey in the round and will enter Tuesday with a three-stroke lead over Beau Bayerl of Akron. He tied the school mark set by Sean Semenetz at the JMU Invitational back in 2005. Schmidt wasn't the only Dragon to stay hot after the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational last week. Stephen Cerbara, who won last week's CAA Player of the Week, shot a 67, his third sub-70 round in his last four outings. The sophomore had an eagle on the par-four 15th hole.
Angelo Giantsopoulos was just three shots behind Cerbara at one-under par. The sophomore has now shot par or less in his last four rounds. Senior Michael Cook and sophomore Jeffrey Cunningham each finished day one at 72. Drexel finished the day with 28 birdies, seven more than any competitor.
The Dragons will head into Tuesday with a two-stroke lead over Akron. The Dragons and the Zips are the only two teams under par after Monday's round. Lafayette and Colgate are tied for third, 14 shots back, while Delaware rounds out the top five. The final round at White Manor begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
