
Rowing Wins Men's Title, Finishes Second in Overall Points at the 81st Dad Vail

PHILADELPHIA – The 2019 81st Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta wrapped up on Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. The Drexel University men's rowing team took home the men's title with 27 while the Drexel men and women combined to finish second in the overall points title.
This marks the third time that the Dragons have captured the men's title (2013, 2015, 2019). With 27 points, they finished ahead of Temple (21) and Saint Joseph's (19). But Drexel saw its six-year run of consecutive overall point titles come to an end on Saturday as Temple scored 52 points to the Dragons' 46.

SATURDAY / GRAND FINALS
Drexel earned six medals with two gold, three silver and one bronze. The men won both golds in the second varsity eight and the freshmen eight. The second varsity eight (5:42.345) held off local rival Saint Joseph's (5:44.890) for the medal while the freshmen eight (5:44.988) edged out Temple (5:48.331).
The Dragons finished second in three grand finals for silver medals. Both varsity eights placed second on Saturday. The men were in second for most of the race but made a strong push towards the last few hundred meters to give Colgate a race. Colgate (5:30.598) just held on as the Dragons were right on their tail (5:30.910), coming less than half a second short. The women's varsity eight were outpaced by Boston U who clocked a time of 6:13.670 to beat out Drexel (6:17.137).
The women's third varsity eight (6:48.922) also placed second behind Temple (6:40.537). Temple went on to win the women's title.
The women's second varsity eight (6:37.152) took bronze with Temple (6:26.860) out front and Bucknell (6:32.112) between them.
SATURDAY / PETITE FINALS
Men
The men's varsity four opened the day with a fifth-place showing in the petite final with a time of 6:39.575.

The Drexel men's and women's alumni eight boats both won gold at Dad Vails this year.
FRIDAY / SEMIFINALS
Overall, Drexel qualified eight of their nine boats to the Grand Finals on Saturday with seven of those coming from semifinal races. After strong performances in the morning time trials, the Dragons continued their ways even as the pace of the regatta slowed and headwinds picked up.
Men
The men's freshman eight boat won their initial time trial with a time of 5:51.950 and went to win their semifinal but at a time of 6:47.529, to give an example at how racing conditions changed.
The men's varsity eight and second varsity eight also emerged victorious in their semifinal races to get into the grand finals. The men's varsity eight edged out Temple (6:19.953) with a time of 6:18.334. The second varsity eight posted a time of 6:32.008 to stay ahead of second-place Marist (6:35.733).
Women
The women's varsity eight also won its semifinal affair. The top two boats, who both advanced to the grand finals, were far ahead of the pack. Drexel came out in front with a time of 7:15.809, followed by Bucknell (7:16.504) before Duquesne (7:30.284) crossed the finish in third.
The women's varsity four placed second in their semifinal. Though Boston University (7:52.521) won the race handedly, the Dragons (8:06.802) came in second to get into the grand final tomorrow.
FRIDAY / HEATS
In two heat races, Drexel sent its first two boats to the grand finals.
Men
The men's third varsity eight placed three to sneak into the grand finals. Temple (6:47.240) took first in the event followed by Delaware (6:52.138) and Drexel (7:03.343). Marietta and Massachusetts finished fourth and fifth to head to the petite finals tomorrow.
Women
The women's second varsity eight won its heat by almost 11 seconds a few races later with a time of 7:31.971 to qualify for the grand finals on Saturday. Following the Dragons were Fordham (7:42.034), Saint Joseph's (7:56.654), Vassar (8:16.381) and Manhattan (8:34.538).
FRIDAY / TIME TRIALS
The Dragons faired well in the morning time trials. The men started off with top finishes in the freshman eight and second varsity eight. With staggered starts, the freshman eight posted the top time of 5:51.950 of 24 boats with the second varsity eight finishing in 5:55.848 for first of 19 boats. In the varsity four boats, the women placed seventh of 28 boats with a time of 7:38.025 while the men came in 10th of 33 at 6:54.566. The men's and women's varsity eight boats placed third and fourth respectively at 5:48.153 and 6:33.373.

Following racing at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta, the Drexel women will turn their attention to the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday, May 19 on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. with a spot at the NCAA Rowing Championships (May 21-June 2) on the line. The men will head to IRA National Championships (May 31-June 2) in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
