Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener to Saint Joseph’s, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA – Gabrielle Vagnozzi's strike in the 20th minute lifted Saint Joseph's past Drexel women's soccer Thursday night at Vidas Fields in the season opener for both sides.
Vagnozzi's marker was one of only three shots, and the only one on target, registered by the Hawks (1-0-0), who were out-shot by the Dragons (0-1-0) by a 12-3 margin. Drexel could not pair quality with quantity in the shot department, landing only four shots on target in the game.
The Dragons dictated action early with Morgan Rees challenging the SJU keeper with a shot on target in the fourth minute. However, the early DU tide soon broke, and an extended period of Hawk pressure led to three early corner kicks and the lone goal of the game.
When the halftime horn sounded, the Hawks had only one shot, which found the back of the net. Drexel put two shots on target in the half, but SJU keeper Cameron Perrot stopped them both.
The Dragons held the majority of possession in the second half and unleashed a barrage of shots in search for the equalizer. As was the case in the first, Drexel struggled to find the target, putting only two of its eight second-half shots on frame.
Drexel controlled the final 10 minutes and appeared primed to find the tying goal. The Dragons best chance came in the 81st minute, when a shot by Rees from the right side of the 18-yard box struck the left post and caromed harmlessly away. Drexel had two more looks at goal in the closing minutes, but both shots missed wide.
Perrott received credit for the win and a shutout after logging four saves.
Miyuki Schoyen played the full 90 minutes between the sticks for the Dragons in her collegiate debut.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field on Aug. 30 when it hosts Marist at 7 p.m.
