PHILADELPHIA – Drexel women's soccer netted two goals in the opening 10 minutes, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in Friday night's 3-1 victory over Marist at Vidas Field.
Lauren Currey and Shea Tomlinson featured heavily on Friday, accounting for two goals and all three assists. Currey set a career high with two assists and matched her career best with four points. Tomlinson, a junior defender, notched her first-ever assist and first-career goal.
The Dragons (1-1-0) seized control of the match early, scoring after just two minutes and 15 seconds of play. Currey forced the issue, driving towards the end line to the left of the Marist goal and firing a tight angle shot. Red Fox keeper Abigail Renaud got to the shot but deflected the ball right to Tomlinson, who cleaned up the mess with a poacher's finish.
Drexel did not take its foot off the gas, scoring less than five minutes later to break open the match. Once again, Currey got to the end line and lofted in a cross from the right side of the box. The pass was spot on and found Morgan Rees, who scored from close range.
The Red Foxes (1-1-0) mounted a brief response, putting two shots on target between the 19th and 26th minutes, but the first half belonged to the Dragons. After 45 minutes, Drexel had nine shots, six on target, while Marist managed only four.
Neither squad made an impression to start the second half with the first 25 minutes being very much back-and-forth.
Marist's first corner of the half led to its only goal in the 72nd minute. The Red Foxes put in a dangerous ball that bounced around inside the Drexel six-yard box. The Dragons could not clear, and Victoria Colatosti eventually tapped the ball in at the left post.
Any threat of a Marist comeback was short-lived as Currey scored 10 minutes later to restore Drexel's two-goal advantage. Tomlinson returned the favor for Currey's assist on her goal, feeding a ball from the right side of the box that Currey poked home into the top netting from point-blank range.
Rees had a golden opportunity to put the game away when she was awarded a penalty kick following a skillful drive into the 18-yard box. The sophomore's spot kick was well-placed in the lower right corner, but Renaud turned the ball away with a fingertip save at full extension.
Both sides recorded six shots, four on target, in the second half. Drexel ended the game with a 15-10 edge in total shots and put 10 of their attempts on frame.
Renaud made seven saves in a losing effort. Miyuki Schoyen picked up the first win of her career after making five saves.
Drexel concludes its three-game home stand on Sunday when the Dragons host La Salle at 1 p.m.
