PHILADELPHIA – Lauren Currey scored her second goal of the holiday weekend, and Miyuki Schoyen and Libby Baeza combined for a five-save shutout as Drexel women's soccer outlasted city foe La Salle, 1-0, at Vidas Field on Sunday.
Sunday's win was the third over the Explorers (1-2-1) in the past four years. Drexel (2-1-0) was winless in its first 10 matches against its city rival.
Currey broke through the Explorers' defensive line in the 59th minute and was picked out by Shea Tomlinson's perfectly weighted through ball. With only the keeper to beat, the sophomore from Harrisburg, Pa. took aim at the top left corner for the lone goal of the match.
Tomlinson and Currey have formed a productive relationship to start the season, combining for three goals and four assists. Tomlinson has assisted both of Currey's markers, and Currey provided the key pass for Tomlinson's score as well.
Defensively, the Dragons kept their first clean sheet of the season despite facing 14 shots from La Salle. Schoyen played the entirety of the first half and stopped the only on-target shot she faced. Baeza, the CAA's preseason goalkeeper of the year, made her season debut in the second half and turned away four shots.
Entering the year just one save shy of entering the career top-10 at Drexel, Baeza moved into sole possession of 11th with 99 stops.
Both sides were evenly matched in the first half, splitting possession evenly and matching one another 1-1 in shots on goal.
The Dragons take flight for their first two road matches of the season. Drexel faces Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles on Friday at 7 p.m. EST before a date with preseason Big West favorite Long Beach State next Sunday at 3 p.m. EST.
