Women’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES – Twenty additional minutes could not separate the visiting Drexel women's soccer team from Loyola Marymount in a 1-1 double overtime draw at Sullivan Field on Friday. The Lions' prolonged stretches of dominance were undone by a long-range effort by Lauren Currey as the Dragons (2-1-1) came from behind in their first-ever match in California.
Both of the evening's goals came within a span of one minute and 13 seconds early in the second half. LMU (0-3-2) continued its run of dictating action to start the half but scored on a counterattack following a rare spell of threatening possession by the Dragons.
Simone Handy released Madison Werner into a one-on-one battle with a Drexel defender, Werner muscled past her marker and beat Miyuki Schoyen to the lower left corner at 62:47.
The Lions had little time to enjoy their lead as Currey produced the equalizer at 64:03. The sophomore received a pass from Melissa Lyon and curled a shot from outside of the box into the right side of the goal.
The marker was the team-leading third of the season for Currey and the eighth of her career. Lyon notched her first-career assist.
Buoyed by Currey's strike, Drexel finished out the second half strong and were the better team to start overtime. The Dragons had the lone shot in the first overtime, an on-target effort at the near post by Annalena O'Reilly. The teams then traded roles for the second overtime with LMU testing Schoyen with the only shot of the period.
Schoyen (1-1-1) played 65 minutes in goal between the second half and both overtime periods. She made two saves.
Loyola Marymount controlled the action in the first half, out-shooting Drexel 7-2 and racking up three corner kicks. The Dragons did not put a shot on target but came close to scoring in the seventh minute, when a bending strike from Morgan Rees curled just outside of the near post. After getting off another shot in the 12th minute, Drexel went the remainder of the half without an attempt as the Lions held onto the ball and pinned the Dragons in their own half of the field.
For all their possession, the Lions never truly threatened in the first half as Libby Baeza produced two routine saves. The CAA's preseason keeper of the year started her first match of the season, played 45 minutes and logged the 100th and 101st saves in her career.
Lee Erickson went the distance in goal for LMU, making one save and conceding a goal.
The Dragons wrap up their west coast swing on Sunday when they play preseason Big West favorite Long Beach State at 3 p.m. EST.
