LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State scored just before the stroke of halftime and added two goals in the span of 14 minutes in the second to hand visiting Drexel women's soccer a 3-0 loss at George Allen Field on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's result snapped a three-match unbeaten streak for the Dragons (2-2-1), which was the longest such active streak in the CAA.
The homestanding 49ers (2-3-0) held decisive edges across the box score. LBSU out-shot Drexel 24-7 and had 15 shots on target to the Dragons' two. Drexel made 12 saves during the match, its most in a single contest since it stopped 20 shots against Northeastern on Sept. 21, 2017.
Drexel soaked up the 49ers' pressure for most of the first half, but LBSU broke through at the 42:26 mark. Myah Baksh beat Libby Baeza on a free kick from over 20 yards out.
Baeza earned the start in goal for the second-straight match and played the first 45 minutes, making three saves.
LBSU peppered the Dragons goal throughout the second half, forcing a season-high nine saves from Miyuki Schoyen. The 49ers converted another set piece in the 66th minute, when Elysia Laramie scored at the far post off a corner kick by Katie Pingel.
The 49ers scored once more in the 80th minute to ice the game. Katie Pingel broke behind the Drexel defensive line and converted Sarah Pilster's feed.
Drexel has only four days to regroup before hosting Monmouth at Vidas Field on Thursday at 7 p.m. Like LBSU, Monmouth won its conference's regular season and postseason titles in 2018 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
