Women’s Soccer Battles Monmouth and Elements to 0-0 Double-Overtime Draw
9/12/2019 10:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Drexel women's soccer withstood an unrelenting Monmouth attack and driving rain in a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Thursday night at Vidas Field. The Hawks (1-2-2) held the lion's share of possession throughout the game, and while the Dragons' bent they did not break. Drexel is now 2-2-2.
The Hawks enjoyed a 15-6 edge in total shots and were plus-three in on-target efforts (5-2). Monmouth was thwarted once by the crossbar and had a late goal called back due to the offside flag. Halftime brought with it pounding rain that did not relent for the remainder of the match. The soggy pitch made for a sloppy second half, with only two shots hitting their target for the final 65 minutes.
The Hawks appeared to have produced a winning goal in the 78th minute, when the ball ended in the back of the net following the last of their eight corner kicks. However, an offside Monmouth player contributed to the attack, and the goal was waved off.
Tired legs and a wet field led to little action in the overtime periods.
Baeza played the full 110 minutes and made five saves in picking up her first shutout of the season. Likewise, Amanda Knaub went the distance and logged two saves.
The Dragons hit the road for a Sunday match at St. John's at 1 p.m. That match is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN3.
