NEW YORK – A pair of late goals from Lily Dunbar and Lauren Currey helped Drexel women's soccer overcome an early 1-0 deficit in the Dragon's 2-1 win over St. John's in double overtime on Sunday afternoon. Dunbar's tally came with just 13 seconds in regulation and forced overtime, where Currey won it for Drexel in the 107th minute.
The Dragons (3-2-2) dominated the box score but trailed for nearly 75 minutes. Drexel out-shot the Red Storm (2-6-0) 24-9 and held a 10-6 edge in shots on target. SJU conceded 11 corner kicks on Sunday and managed just one for itself.
Alex Madden struck first in the 16th minute and the 1-0 score line held until the closing seconds. Drexel frantically searched for an equalizer in the second half, firing off 11 shots in the second and forcing six saves from Naya Lipkens. The overwhelming pressure finally broke the Red Storm defense, and Dunbar capitalized with the first tally of her career.
Drexel was held without a shot attempt in the first overtime period, and Libby Baeza recorded one save to send the match into the final 10 minutes of action. From there, the Dragons regained their aggressiveness, shooting five times and earning a corner kick in the 107th minute. Isabel Kuzy put the delivery on target and a battle for the loose ball ensued. Out of the chaos stepped Currey, who deposited the ball in the back of the net for her fourth-career game-winning goal.
Baeza (2-1-1) played all 106 minutes and 53 seconds in goal for Drexel, stopping five shots and letting just the lone goal through. In nearly 352 minutes of action this season, the CAA's preseason keeper of the year has made 19 saves and owns a 0.51 goals against average.
The Dragons return home to Vidas Field on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match with Seton Hall.
