Late CofC Goal Downs Women’s Soccer in CAA Home Opener
9/29/2019 2:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – A superb strike from freshman Olivia Freitas undid an otherwise strong performance by Drexel women's soccer in its 1-0 loss to College of Charleston in the team's CAA home opener on Sunday afternoon.
The Dragons (4-5-2, 0-2-0 CAA) dictated the terms of the match for large stretches, hemming the Cougars (7-3-0, 2-0-0 CAA) into their defensive half for prolonged stretches of time.
Drexel fired off 17 shots in the match to CofC's eight but managed to put only five on target. On the other hand, the Cougars were more precise with their attempts, testing goalkeeper Libby Baeza three times.
Freitas, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, collected her third game-winning goal of the season in the 81st minute. She found a pocket of space in the middle of the Drexel penalty area, received a pass from Leah Deutsch and fired an unsavable shot into the upper left corner.
Baeza (3-4-1) made two stops on Sunday.
Two Cougars split time in goal. Maggie Berlin started and played the first 45 minutes, making one save. Meredith Holton (6-2-0) came on at halftime, recorded three saves and picked up the win.
Drexel's CAA campaign continues with back-to-back road matches at Delaware on Thursday and Elon on Oct. 6.
