PHILADELPHIA – The fifth-ranked Drexel women's squash team picked up its third victory against a top-10 opponent with a 6-3 win over No. 9 Cornell on Sunday afternoon at the Kline & Specter Squash Center. Five of the Dragons' six wins came in the form of three-game sweeps.
Alina Bushma, Hannah Blatt, Anna Hughes, Ciara Richards and Ona Prokes all prevailed in three games. Playing in the No. 2 match, Bushma dropped Lily Zelov by an 11-9, 11-2, 11-4 final score for her team-leading seventh victory of the year.
Blatt won her second match in a row when she topped Madison Miles – 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 – in the No. 3 position. Hughes bested Colby Gallagher in the No. 4 match (13-11, 11-7, 11-3).
Richards made quick work of Mimi Delisser in the fifth match, winning 11-5, 11-4, 11-5. The win is the fifth of the season for the freshman from Pontypridd, Wales.
Playing out of the No. 7 position, Prokes swept McKenna Stoltz – 11-3, 11-8, 11-5.
Brooke Herring prevailed in a marathon match in the No. 6 position. She dropped the first game, 11-7, but rallied with wins of 11-2 and 11-7 in the next two games. Alexis Shatzman prolonged her eventual defeat with an 11-8 win in the fourth game, but Herring won 11-5 in the final game.
Stephanie Ryan was narrowly clipped by Lucy Martin in five games in the No. 8 match. Ryan fell behind 11-8, 11-9 but kept the contest alive with consecutive 11-7 victories in the third and fourth games. The decisive fifth game was as tight as the overall match, with Martin eking out a 14-12 winner.
Karina Tyma won the first game against 2019 Ramsay Cup runner-up Sivasangari Subramaniam in decisive fashion, 11-1, but Tyma could not build on her emphatic first-game winner. Subramaniam took the next three games and the match.
