Women’s Basketball Wins Sixth-Straight on Sunday at William & Mary, 61-54

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (13-6, 6-1 CAA) hung on to win its sixth-straight league contest on Sunday afternoon against the College of William & Mary Tribe (13-6, 4-4 CAA) by a final of 61-54 from Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va. to close out the conference road weekend.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Drexel went up by double digits in the first quarter before W&M slowly chipped away at the advantage to tie it up early in the third quarter.
* Though the Tribe tied it up two other times including one in the early goings of the fourth, Drexel never gave up the edge. DU eventually used a 10-0 run in the fourth to retake control of the game and hold on for the league victory.
* Foul trouble for William & Mary led to Drexel going 19-of-22 from the free-throw line with the Dragons in the bonus for the final three quarters.
* Senior Niki Metzel finished with a season- and game-high 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed four rebounds and had two steals and two blocks.
* Senior Bailey Greenberg scored 12 points with six rebounds, four assists and a steal.
* Senior Aubree Brown finished in double figures for the second time this season, scoring 10 points with six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
* Senior Mariah Leonard and sophomore Kate Connolly both contributed eight points each.
GAMEPLAY
Q1 /
Drexel jumped out to a 7-0 lead to force the Tribe to burn their first timeout less than 90 seconds into the game. The stretch continued as Metzel knocked down her second baseline jumper, sandwiched between two W&M turnovers. The Tribe made their first basket, a three-pointer, 2:39 into the contest to make it 9-3 in favor of the Dragons. Although DU finished 3-of-12 from the floor to end the quarter, Connolly delivered two treys off the bench, including one on the last possession to give the Dragons a 10-point lead after 10 minutes, 17-7.
Q2 /
W&M scored the first 10 of 14 points of the second to pull within four, 21-17. The Dragons were limited to just 4-of-8 from the floor in the second, though W&M got into foul trouble, sending DU to the line three times. Drexel was able to push it back up to eight with under four minutes to go but W&M made the last two baskets of the half to get back within four at the break, 30-26.
Q3 /
A 7-3 start for the Tribe to begin the third quarter evened the score at 33-33 in the opening two and a half minutes. Drexel was able to put together an 8-2 stretch to go back up by six following two free throws from Greenberg, 43-37. Though the Tribe tied it up twice in the quarter, DU never relinquished the lead as the Dragons took a 43-41 advantage into the fourth.

After W&M opened the fourth with a jumper to tie it up, Metzel scored the next four points to start a 10-0 run for the Dragons. Free throws from Greenberg, another jumper from Metzel and then a basket from Brown following a loose ball made it 53-43 as the Tribe called a timeout with 5:09 to play. Metzel and Brown both reached double figures in the fourth to join Greenberg in the win.

* Drexel shot 42.2% (19-of-45) from the floor, 30.8% (4-of-13) from three-point range and 86.4% (19-of-22) from the foul line.
* William & Mary shot 47.1% (24-of-51) from the field, 28.6% (4-of-14) from beyond the arc and 50.0% (2-of-4) from the free-throw line.
