PHILADELPHIA - Camren Wynter broke a 50-50 tie with a three-pointer with 1:56 to play to give Drexel the lead for good as the Dragons defeated Delaware, 61-55, on Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Wynter's three-pointer started a 7-0 run as the Dragons improved to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Blue Hens are now 11-5 and 1-2 in league play.
It was a game of runs throughout the night in an exciting, intense game between the two long-time rivals. The Dragons led by nine early in the second half before Delaware answered with nine-straight points to tie it up at 39-39 with 10:44 to play. Drexel countered with seven straight points, but once again Delaware responded and tied it up at 46 on a Ryan Allen three-point play with just under six minutes to play to set the stage for the dramatic ending.
Drexel had possession with 2:20 to play and tried to set up for a good shot. The Blue Hens defended well before Matey Juric took and missed a three-pointer. James Butler, who was in the right place most of the night, picked up the loose ball, passed it out to the top of the key to Wynter and the sophomore knocked down the trey to put Drexel in front, 53-50. Delaware came down court and missed a three. On the ensuing possession, Wynter drove the lane and scored to put the Dragons ahead by five. After a Blue Hen time out, Juric made a key defensive play, coming up with a steal off a Nate Darling attempted feed to the post. Juric was fouled and made both ends of a one-and-on, making it a 57-50 game. Delaware got as close as four points after an Allen banked three-pointer with just 12 seconds to go, but the Dragons made two more free throws to come up with the hard fought win.
Delaware jumped out to an early five-point lead in the first half, but a 14-0 Drexel run put the Dragons ahead by nine. After five straight Blue Hen points, the Dragons ended the half by scoring six straight points and holding Delaware without a point for the final 6:30 of the half. Drexel took a 30-20 lead to the locker room.
Wynter finished with a game-high 18 points and five assists. Butler recorded his 10th double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. The Dragons shot just 37 percent, but came up with 19 offensive rebounds, which led to 20 second chance points. Drexel outrebounded Delaware, 43-27. Juric added nine points off the bench and Coletrane Washington had one of his best performances in a Drexel uniform with eight points.
Drexel's defense held Darling, who came into the game third in the CAA in scoring, to just 3-for-11 shooting and eight points. As a team, the Blue Hens were held to just four three pointers in 18 attempts (.222). Allen led Delaware with 13 points, while Villanova transfer Dylan Painter added 10.
The Dragons will play five of their next seven games away from home. That stretch begins on Thursday when Drexel visits Towson in a game that can be seen live on the CBS Sports Network.
