A Message From Head Swimming & Diving Coach, Nathan Lavery
11/16/2020 12:00:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
My name is Nathan Lavery, and I am the new head coach for the Drexel University Swimming and Diving program. Before I begin talking about the Drexel program and what I would like to see from it and its student-athletes, I think it would be fitting to introduce myself and talk about my journey to Drexel.
I am a South African native, though I have dual citizenship with the United States. My family still lives in Africa, and I swam for the South African National Team on multiple occasions. Sports have always been an essential part of my life, and probably always will be. I came to the United States to swim for Texas A&M University on a full scholarship.
While at A&M, I coached club for a few summers and helped prepare many athletes for their summer meets. From preparing 12-year-old kids for their first sectionals to training Olympian athletes. After that, I coached a club in Houston, Texas. Then I started my collegiate coaching with over five years at Villanova University, one year at Georgia Tech, and two years at Texas Christian University.
I currently live in Philadelphia with my wife, Amy, and our three-legged dog. Amy works for the Centers for Disease Control. It is an essential job in today's world.
Program, Community and the Future
Since my hiring, I have been nothing but impressed with Drexel University and the Athletics senior staff. They have entrusted me to continue developing the program to become notorious for exemplary student-athletes and performance in the pool.
At Drexel Swim and Dive, our goal is to develop young adults of integrity, courage, and growth. We want to strive towards successful and meaningful lives for ourselves and those around us. We set standards to meet this vision and aspire to embrace these actions every day.
What is more important is making sure our actions follow these words. Being authentic and "walking the line" is what will move our program and the wonderful young people who are a part of it forward. Swimming and academic results are a by-product of our belief, commitment, and actions towards these greater ideals. My staff and I hope to work with the young adults in our program to embrace these things.
A strong community can help all of us achieve these things, not just the student-athletes. I see the opportunity for a truly substantial and supportive Drexel Swim and Dive FAMILY.
Hope to see you at a meet soon and look forward to meeting you when the time comes.
