Women’s Basketball Picks up 12th-Straight Win, OT Victory Over William & Mary, 84-74

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's basketball team (19-6, 12-1 CAA) defeated the College of William & Mary Tribe (18-7, 9-5 CAA) on Friday evening by a final of 84-74 in overtime from the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia. The win came as Drexel's 12th-straight victory this season as the team improved to 12-1 in league play.
HIGHLIGHTS
* 12 consecutive wins is tied for the third-longest streak in program history. Drexel won 16-straight games on two occasions, including 11 years ago under head coach Denise Dillon (Jan. 22, 2009 to March 15, 2009).
* Drexel is now 5-0 in overtime games this season.
* Sophomore Keishana Washington tied for a game-high 25 points behind 10-of-19 shooting with three three-pointers. The sophomore scored 10 of the Dragons' 16 overtime points to lead DU to victory.
* Senior Bailey Greenberg notched her ninth 20-point game of the year with exactly 20 points. She shot 5-of-12 from the floor including 3-of-6 from deep. The senior went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line and moved into 10th place on Drexel's all-time made free-throw list with No. 289 . She also had three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
* It marks the first time since March 1, 2019 that two Dragons finished with at least 20 points each.
* Senior Niki Metzel finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists.
* Junior Hannah Nihill scored nine points, going 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. She also dished out a game-high seven assists, tying her season high.
* Senior Aubree Brown recorded eight points, four assists and four rebounds. The senior now has 499 career dimes as she looks to become the third Dragon with at least 500 career assists.

Q1 /
Drexel jumped out to an 8-2 lead with four points from Metzel before extending it to a nine-point advantage, 13-4, at the first media break with 4:18 to play. Washington knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the quarter to lead all scorers with eight points. With just over four seconds on the clock, the Dragons ran a play from the baseline. Brown made the in-bounds pass to Nihill in the paint who then found Greenberg underneath for the easy layup as time expired, 20-11.
Q2 /
William & Mary started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to trim the Dragons' lead down to two, 20-18, as DU called a timeout with 8:44 to play. The stretch continued as W&M took the lead, 25-20, capping the 14-0 run. Connolly scored the first points of the second for DU with 5:10 to play, 25-22. W&M outscored Drexel 28-13 in the frame while the Tribe's Eva Hodgson had 17 points at the break to lead all scorers; she tied for a game-high 25 points on the evening. Greenberg scored seven of Drexel's 13 second-quarter points. Washington led the Dragons with 10 points at the break.

The Dragons used a quick 5-0 run to get back within a point behind a trey from Greenberg and a jumper from Metzel to start the second half. After an almost three-minute scoreless stretch for both teams, W&M scored consecutive layups as Nihill responded with a corner three-pointer, 43-41. The two squads traded baskets as the Tribe slowly took a four-point lead, 51-47. Greenberg and Brown then drained back-to-back three-pointers to give the Dragons a 53-51 edge with 1:42 to play. William & Mary tied it up, 55-5, with 30 seconds left while Greenberg hit one of two at the line to give Drexel a one-point advantage heading into the fourth, 56-55.

The game stayed tight throughout the fourth quarter with both teams within a basket on each possession. Trailing by three with under a minute to go, Brown hit one of two at the line, 68-66. A turnover with 17 seconds left gave the Dragons another chance. Brown made a driving layup with 7.5 on the clock to tie it up, 68-68. Another turnover by W&M with under two seconds gave Drexel the ball on the other end after a timeout. With 1.3 on the clock, Washington put up a three that was blocked, sending the game into overtime.
OT /
Washington was unstoppable in the overtime period. The sophomore scored 10 points in the final five minutes, including 10 of the team's first 12 points. The Dragons ended the contest on a 9-0 run to win, 84-74.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Drexel shot 44.3% (27-of-61) from the floor, 47.4% (9-of-19) from three-point range and 63.6% (21-of-33) from the foul line.
* William & Mary shot 48.1% (26-of-54) from the field, 33.3% (5-of-15) from beyond the arc and 94.4% (17-of-18) from the free-throw line.
* Drexel turned the ball over just nine times on the night.
* DU forced 18 W&M turnovers and scored 22 points off those miscues.
