PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Men's Basketball suffered a 77-68 setback to Northeastern on Saturday afternoon in its final game this season inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons fall to 13-16 overall and 6-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Huskies even their overall and conference marks at 14-14 and 8-8, respectively.
Camren Wynter hit the 20-point threshold for the 11th time this season and added five assists, three steals and a pair of three-pointers. James Butler was dependable as always with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Butler's seven rebounds moves him into seventh place on the single-season rebounding ledger. He now has 336 and is five boards shy of sole possession of fifth.
Drexel's freshmen, Mate Okros and T.J. Bickerstaff, chipped in eight apiece. Okros nailed a pair of long-range shots while Bickerstaff made four of his five attempts from the field and grabbed seven rebounds, matching a personal high.
Northeastern received double-digit points from four players. Jordan Roland netted a game-high 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting and an 8-of-9 mark from the foul line. As a team, the Huskies made 22 of their 25 free throws (.880).
Wynter scored the first points of the game, but a 6-0 NU run put the visitors ahead quickly. Tyson Walker made it 4-2 in favor of the Huskies at the 17:35 mark, and Northeastern led for the next 12:54. Two unanswered baskets from Butler gave Drexel a 24-23 edge with 5:19 to go, but the lead switched back to NU in just 20 seconds.
A trey from Okros followed by a Wynter layup at the 2:17 mark gave Drexel a three-point lead, its largest of the game, at 32-29. After Roland scored the next four points, Bickerstaff laid it in to give the Dragons a 34-33 edge with 1:15 to play. Shaquille Walters hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to put NU up by two, and the Huskies never looked back.
Northeastern outscored Drexel, 13-4, to start the second half and led 49-38 with 15:21 to go. The Huskies were still up by double digits, 52-42, with 13:31 on the clock, but Drexel surged with a 9-2 run. Bickerstaff got the Dragons going when he rebounded his own miss and stuck it back in. Drexel forced a turnover on the ensuing defensive possession, which led to a Butler layup. Following a Huskies basket, Wynter scored five straight to make the score 54-51 with 10:57 to go.
Bickerstaff cut the deficit to two, 55-53, with 8:55 showing on the clock, but a 7-0 Northeastern run restored its control over the game. Roland reestablished the Huskies' double-digit advantage with a jumper at the 2:19 mark, and NU never allowed the Dragons to get closer than six points again.
Drexel concludes the regular season with road games at UNCW (Feb. 27) and College of Charleston (Feb. 29).
