CHARLESTON, S.C. - Drexel battled but came up short at the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons led by one with under five minutes to play, but the Cougars scored five straight and held the lead the rest of the way. Camren Wynter and Zach Walton each scored 18 for the Dragons, who will enter the CAA Championships with a 13-18 mark. Charleston improved to 17-13 behind 25 points from Grant Riller.
Zach Walton had a three-pointer bounce around and go in with 4:46 to play to give the Dragons the momentum and a 62-61 lead. On the Cougars' next possession, Jaylen McManus scored and was fouled. He converted the three-point play and Charleston took the lead for good. Wynter missed a jumper the next time down court and when the Cougars got back in the offensive end, Zep Jasper sank a three-pointer, putting Charleston up by five. The Dragons would cut the lead to three on one more occasion, but that was as close as they could get on Senior Day at TD Arena.
The Cougars raced out to a 27-17 lead and looked like they were in control. However, Drexel rattled off eight straight points to get back in the game. Sam Miller hit a late three-pointer to give Charleston some momentum late in the half as the Cougars took a 39-32 at intermission. Riller had a big first half for Charleston on Senior Night. He had 19 points at the break. Walton came off the bench to lead the Dragons with 13 points in the half.
Drexel shot 45 percent from the floor in the game and won the battle of the boards, 36-30. Wynter had seven assists and a pair of steals as he once again played the full 40 minutes. Walton was 7-for-13 shooting and had three three-pointers. James Butler snared 11 rebounds.
Riller was 9-for-16 shooting and had four three-pointers. Miller scored 14 and had eight rebounds, while McManus and Jasper finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Dragons will begin play at the 2020 Hercules Tires CAA Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday in Washington, D.C. against either UNCW or James Madison.
