Women’s Basketball Wins Ninth-Straight CAA Contest on Friday at Hofstra, 45-32

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (16-6, 9-1 CAA) picked up a road win against the Hofstra University Pride (3-18, 0-10 CAA) on Friday night by a final of 45-32 from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, N.Y.
HIGHLIGHTS
* The win comes as Drexel's ninth-straight victory as the team improved to 9-1 in conference play.
* The Dragons held Hofstra to just 32 points, the second lowest allowed by DU this season (La Salle, 31 on Dec. 17).
* Drexel limited Hofstra to just 11 first-half points, which included a layup with 3.4 seconds left in the second quarter. It is the second-least amount of points the Dragons have allowed in a half this year (10 to La Salle in the second half on Dec. 17).
* DU used a 17-1 run from the midway point of the first quarter to the seven-minute mark of the second to get a double-digit advantage.
* Seniors Aubree Brown and Bailey Greenberg played in their 89th win at Drexel to set a new program record, breaking alum Meghan Creighton's record of 88 wins.
* Senior Mariah Leonard scored a team-high 10 points behind 5-of-7 shooting as she was the only Dragon to finish in double figures. She also grabbed five rebounds.
* Greenberg recorded eight points and tied for a game-high 10 rebounds. The senior also had three assists and two steals.
* Sophomores Kate Connolly and Keishana Washington both made three three-pointers off the bench for nine points each. Connolly also had two steals and a game-high two blocks. Washington made a game-high three steals.
* Brown scored four points with a game-high five assists along with five rebounds.
GAMEPLAY
Q1 /
Both teams had a bit of a slow start to kick things off. Hofstra made the first two field goals of the contest. The Dragons missed their first eight shots to begin the game. Washington, off the bench, then made a corner three-pointer with 5:11 to go in the quarter to get things start for DU, who only trailed 4-3 at the five-minute mark. Connolly, Brown and Leonard built it into a 10-0 run to end the quarter as the Dragons made three more shots under two minutes to give Drexel a six-point lead after one, 10-4.
Q2 /
The first quarter run was stopped early in the second at 13-0 following another Washington trey as Hofstra made a free throw. Hofstra made its first basket in 10:02 minutes at the 6:15 mark of the second quarter as Drexel led 17-7. The Dragons took their largest lead of 15 after Connolly's second three-pointer with 1:40 to play, 22-7. The Pride scored the final four points to break into double digits before halftime, which included a layup in the final seconds, 22-11.
Q3 /
Leonard and Greenberg each had four points in the third with the Dragons totaling only eight points in the period. Drexel was just one of its first nine shots to begin the third quarter as the Pride pulled within six, 24-18. A putback from Greenberg put Drexel back up by eight, 28-20. The eight-point margin held as Drexel owned a 30-22 advantage heading into the fourth.

A three-pointer from Hendrixson gave Drexel a double-digit lead once again, 33-22, to start the fourth. Leonard was the first, and only, Dragon in double figures with a jumper to give her 10 points and the Dragons a 10-point lead, 35-25. DU used a 10-0 run from 8:11 to 1:49 to go up 45-27. The Pride made the final five points to get 32 for the game as Drexel won 45-32.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Drexel shot 27.4% (17-of-62) from the floor, 25.9% (7-of-27) from three-point range and 100.0% (4-of-4) from the foul line.
* Hofstra shot 28.6% (12-of-42) from the field, 27.3% (3-of-11) from beyond the arc and 71.4% (5-of-7) from the free-throw line.
* DU dished out 15 assists on its 17 made field goals.
* Drexel made 12 steals for its 11th game with at least 11 steals.
* The Dragons have now won six-straight against Hofstra and lead the all-time series 45-30.
