Tyma, Bushma Earn All-American Status at CSA Individual Championships
3/6/2020 9:50:00 PM | Women's Squash
PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Karina Tyma and sophomore Alina Bushma received all-American recognition after the first day of the College Squash Association Individual Championships. Tyma became the first individual in women's program history to earn first team all-American honors, while Bushma secured second team status.
The two newcomers join Hayley Hughes as the only Drexel women's squash players to become all-Americans. Hughes received second team all-American status in 2016.
Both Bushma and Tyma featured in the Ramsay Cup, the top-flight bracket featuring the 16-best collegiate players in the country.
Tyma bested Princeton's Elle Ruggiero in a come-from-behind effort in the round of 16 to earn first team honors. Ruggiero took the opener, 11-9, but Tyma won the next three games, two in convincing fashion. She tied the match with an 11-3 win in the second before a narrow 12-10 triumph in the third. She then cruised past Ruggiero and into the program record books with an 11-5 win in the fourth.
No. 2-seeded Sivasangari Subramaniam of Cornell cut short Tyma's run at the Individual Championships with an 11-6, 11-4, 11-7 result in the quarterfinals.
Bushma bowed out of the Ramsay Cup after a pair of four-game losses. She fell to fourth-seeded Amelia Henley of Harvard – 11-7, 7-11, 11-3, 11-5 – in the opening round then lost to Sarahi Lopez of Trinity in the consolation quarterfinals by an 11-3, 6-11, 14-12, 11-8 margin. The native of Kyiv, Ukraine finishes her debut season with 15 wins, which is tied for the second-most in a single season in Drexel history.
Anna Hughes won twice on Friday to reach the semifinals of the Holleran South bracket and is two wins from joining her older sister as a second team all-American. She swept Yale's Gigi Yeung in the round of 16 – 11-9, 11-9, 11-7 – before prevailing in four games over second-seeded Alexa Jacobs (7-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-6).
Hughes and Jane Pincus of Columbia square off in the semifinals tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. The Holleran South final is scheduled for Sunday at 11:10 a.m.
